Nightly Closures of Custis Trail This Week

Late night joggers and cyclists beware. From Arlington County spokesperson Susan Kalish:

“[The] Custis Trail under I-66  (between Westover and Bon Air Parks) will be closed from 9pm to 5am from Monday, August 23 to Thursday, August 26 so that a protective framework can be installed to protect users during the upcoming widening of the vehicular bridge.”

why does that bridge have to be widened? I thought all changes were going to be in the existing right of way. Does our Master Transportation Committee Plan that THES is always citing call for the widening of I-66?

    • Wrong Street:

Patrick Henry Dr. is the street being widened, there isn’t even an I-66 bridge in that area.

      • Caroline Temmermand:

The section of the CUSTIS trail being closed AT NIGHT is shown on the map above. Look for the blue marker. You can also look at the M in the the phrase Custis Memorial Pkwy. It is aligned with the trail section.

The section of the W&OD trail running under Patrick Henry is unaffected by the planned late night activities.

  • charlie:

Patrick Henry couldn’t possibly get any wider when it crosses I-66.
I thought it was for the underpass as the Custis trail goes under I-66 from the northside to the southside.

  • charlie:

why isn’t there a website page to explain all this to us bike commuters?

I hope they mean the bridge is being widened towards the metro tracks. I don’t see how it can be widened to the north without effecting the bike trail between Westover Park and Ballston.

  • Tim, BikeArlington:

After double checking with Arlington County Bike/Ped engineers/planners I am told that this article and map are correct.

The detour will take trail users over the bike/ped crossover bridge a few hundred yards east of the underpass.

  • Tim, BikeArlington:

And here’s the latest update I’ve gotten from the Trails Manager, “The detour signs are in place for the Westover Underpass. Our ranger unit will move traffic barrels and additional signage into place around 8:30 pm when the detour is in effect. Our trail crew will remove the blockades in the morning around 7 am.”
