TRAFFIC ALERT — Glebe Road Shut Down at Route 50

by ARLnow.com | February 11, 2011 at 5:51 pm | 1,322 views | 23 Comments

Update at 7:50 p.m. — All lane closures except one northbound lane on Glebe Road have been lifted.

Both directions of Glebe Road have been shut down and one lane of westbound Route 50 has been blocked due to chunks of concrete falling off the overpass.

ARLnow.com is hearing that officials were notified earlier this week that debris fell off the bridge and struck a vehicle on Sunday. No one was hurt, we hear. No word on what action, if any, was taken after that incident.

We need not worry. VDOT tolds the Glebe Rd bridge was OK months ago when the concrete fell off.

      Whew, that’s a relief!

Arlington should sue to shutdown Route 50.

    • Lou

I’ll sue Arlington if they don’t sue anyone.

    • Arlwhenever

Under the theory of Arlington County’s HOT Lanes suit, if the state had rushed forward to fix the Glebe Rd/Route 50 (a major east/west commuter thoroughfare) bridge, then VDOT would have been violating the Civil Rights Act of 1964 and the Equal Protection Clause of the Consitution, by faciliting the travels of rich, white folk in Merrifield, Fairfax City and beyond.

      I sense karma at work.

another reason to not go to North Arlington.

another reason not to go to south arlington

      • Greg

In all of this South Arlington vs. North Arlington battle, it turns out Central Arlington really sucks the most.

Another indication of why it is utter foolish for Arlington government to oppose widening the two “Interstate” highways (66 and 395), not to mention the HOV restrictions, and preferring to have all of that Fairfax-bound traffic on the local Route 50 instead. Shut down Route 50 and they have nowhere to go.

I went eastbound on Route 50 at about 5 p.m. and the westbound lanes were a parking lot all the way to Rosslyn.

Gee those of us on METRO had NO PROBLEMS…hint…hint:)

      • Andrew

Right, commuting on the orange line is such a joy…

        • Dan

“Right, commuting on the orange line is such a joy…”

It only takes two trains or so to position yourself on the platform so that you are right in front of a door so you can crowd into the car or are you talking about the delays once you are on the train ??

But not to fear, we are going to have a new entrance to the Rossyln station !!

    • mehoo

Um, no. It’s foolish to waste money on building new infrastructure when the existing stuff is falling apart.

  • Aaron

Killed rush hour traffic tonight. WB 50 was backed way into DC over the bridge. All the alternates, such as Wilson, were dead stop around 5:30pm. You couldn’t even get off Courthouse or any surrounding road onto Wilson wb.

I let my navigation hook me up to Lee, but normal 10 minute commute took 30!

Thats what happens when you do everything you can to obstruct improvement of the vehicle network, you get a system so fragile that a single spark sets off a bonfire.

      • mehoo

Wrong – that’s what happens when you hold improvements and maintenance hostage to pie-in-the-sky new highway projects that literally go around the problem instead of fixing it.

looks like SB glebe is two lanes and NB glebe is just one lane at this point.
can’t see Route 50 on Cameras.

annoying fact for me: drive this way everyday. METRO Traffic at 6 PM was NOT reporting this incident. WHo cares about 270 and back-ups at Montorse, those are daily. 50/Glebe should be at speed during rush.

    • Arlwhenever

WB Rte 50 is still one lane, but no back-up. Crew is hard at work in right lane of NB Glebe, backing up to near Lincoln Town Car and the 7/11 at Old Glebe Rd.

  • Aaron

I was sitting in the traffic on 50 after going over Memorial Bridge and thankfully Arlington Alert sent an e-mail at that exact moment. Got off 50 and fast, which was no easy feat in itself.

  • DT

The county should sue the state some more. So far, its working great.
