Fat Tuesday Events Within Walking Distance of the Parade

If you’re heading to the Clarendon Mardi Gras/St. Patrick’s Day parade tonight, you might also be considering heading out to the bars afterward. Here are a few places where you can find some festive Fat Tuesday fun within walking distance of the parade.

Ragtime (1345 North Courthouse Road) — Ragtime is holding its 10th annual Mardi Gras party tonight. The restaurant is serving a special Cajun menu all day, Hurricanes and Cyclones are on special, and the Le Bon Temps Krew will be playing New Orleans jazz music from 6:30 to 10:30 p.m. And yes, there will be beads.

Iota Club & Cafe (2832 Wilson Blvd) — Iota is hosting a parade viewing party on its front porch. After the parade, local southern acoustic rock outfit Brother Shamus will take the stage. Admission is $5 after the parade, free before.

Bayou Bakery (1515 North Courthouse Road) – The Louisiana-themed eatery in Courthouse is decked out in purple, gold and green for the holiday. Tonight the restaurant will be holding a “Bayou Gras” celebration with $7 plates including Chicken and Andouille Gumbo, Shrimp and Sausage Jambalaya, Crab Boil “Peppa Weenies” and Muff-a-Lottas. Abita is on tap at Bayou Bakery, but last we checked they were sold out of homemade King Cakes.

Screwtop Wine Bar (1025 North Fillmore Street) — For those looking for a more low-key atmosphere before or after the parade, Screwtop will be serving $7 Mardi Gras mimosas throughout the evening.

Four Courts/Ri-Ra/Kitty O’Shea’s — These Irish pubs along Wilson Boulevard won’t be holding any pre-St. Patrick’s Day specials or entertainment to coincide with the parade. However, each says they will be offering their normal Tuesday specials, which means beer as low as $2.50.

I object to this meshing of the two parades. How can I figure out who to kiss if I don’t know who’s Irish and who’s just drunk?

    • http://www.peoplepoweredarlington.com Barry

There’s a difference? I fully expect to be both tonight.

    • local

Everyone at a St. Patrick’s Day parade is Irish, and drunk.

Agreed, there should be no merging. Both occasions should be fully celebrated.

Since its too late to fight this clumsy combination, I propose continuing our celebrations straight through St Patty’s day on the 17th. It is a Saints day after all, can’t overlook that. A week and a half or so should do them justice.. though, of course, if the Feds shut down after the 18th, I won’t stand in the way of those interested in continuing on. Lassez les bons temps rouler!

  • ClarendonKing

So they are merging two Catholic parties into one? That’s fine, I don’t celebrate either anyway.

Dour Anglo-Dutch Penny-Pinching, but secretly jealous, Protestant signing off.

      Oh joy.

Ever seen West Wing? Republican Interns.

    • ClarendonKing

      Thanks! Might actually go.

    • local

Thanks for letting me know what place to avoid like the plague.

      • ChrisG

That’s open minded and inclusive of you.

Variety being the spice of life; I rather enjoy interacting socially with folks whom I don’t agree 100%. All are welcome (even local), if you decide to stop in say hello.

        • mehoo

Oh, I don’t mind interacting with people I don’t agree with (I’m here, aren’t I?) Just not at a party like this one, on Mardis Gras.

I’m sure you can think of groups whose parties don’t appeal to you too.

        • local

What if I only agree with them 2 or 3%?

Seriously, I don’t mind disagreeing with people, but actually partying with young Republicans? No thanks.

          • ChrisG

            Whatever floats your boat.

It’s funny how in just a few comments here the Young Republicans are to be avoided like the plague and referred to as “closeted gay guys” (if some of us are is there something wrong with that?).

I’m sure some of you open minded folks are going to call out AllenB for his bigoted comment any moment now.

          • AllenB

It wasn’t a bigoted comment at all. There’s nothing wrong with being closeted and gay. The closted part is your choice, the gay part isn’t a choice. The part I take exception to is being part of a party that is clearly against you.

And FWIW, I’m an openly gay Democrat.

Let’s not take something said lightheartedly in jest and turn it into something more. Kiss and make up, honey? ;)

          • Bender

**the gay part isn’t a choice**

So you are saying that you are gay against your will?
That if you did have a choice, you would choose not to be gay?

          • AllenB

What I’m saying is that being a gay isn’t a choice.

          • AllenB

I realize I didn’t answer your question fully, so I’ll get to the point. No, even if I did have a choice, I wouldn’t change who I am. As Gaga said, “Baby, I was born this way!”

          • mehoo

If anyone ever says being gay is a choice, I ask them “so when did you choose to be straight? did you weight the pluses and minuses?”

          • R.Griffon

I only have a *small* problem with people being closeted (I think everyone should be out and be proud of who they are, but I realize that’s pretty naive), but the real problem is Republicans who wear their homophobia on their sleeve by supporting anti-gay policies and talking about how immoral it is for these people to do something that’s perfectly natural and harms no one, only to be caught with their gay lover later.

            It’s called hypocrisy.

But I have no special hate for young Republicans. I used to be one back in college (and shortly thereafter) when I didn’t have much real world experience and it was easy to see things in black and white from a high horse. I see them kinda like I view kids playing the the park; I think they’re kinda cute playing in their simple little worlds.

      • CW

You have to be told in order to know to avoid clarendon grill?

        • CW

There are things about clarendon grill that I like even less than republicans, and that’s saying something.

          • GMo

            +1

        • JamesE

Crappy bands and $5 cover charges are the best

    • AllenB

So that’s where all the closeted gay guys will be tonight.

      • ChrisG

        True colors shining through?

        • AllenB

          Me? Yup.

          • Yep

            ZING!

Quick addition: There are Mardi Gras specials at Velocity 5 tonight.

    • rcw

Do you know anything regarding open containers and ACPD?

      • mehoo

As far as I know, state law says no open containers, and no exceptions for Arlington or parades.

In other words, just pour your beer in an empty soda can, or bring a Coke and a flask of whiskey that fits in your pocket, like most people.

        • Aaron

There are no open container laws in Arlington County other than the prohibition on alcoholic beverages in County aprks.

          • wat

no law about it means that you go by state law, which prohibits all open containers in public.

however unlike many states, you are allowed to have open containers in a moving car, provided you aren’t the driver.

          • Aaron

You would be correct hypothetically, if in fact there were any Commonwealth laws against public drinking or public possession of alcohol. There aren’t. It’s subject to local ordinance only and Arl Co’s only ordinance on the subject is to ban drinking in parks.

          • Yep

Aaron, you’ll be my lawyer when I test this matter?

          • mehoo

A cursory internet search (for what that’s worth) says Aaron is right! Wow. I guess I’ve never been in a jurisdiction in Virginia that has no local open container ordinance for public streets.

Wish I’d known this last night.

To quote the all knowing Charlie Sheen, “Sorry you didn’t read the instructions before you showed up to the party.”

  • BOATMAN

CLARENDON GRILL WILL HAVE ROOM AT THE BAR. SHINE YOUR WING TIPS.

  • Jason S.

I wonder how many people even know what they are celebrating, probably not many. Either way, it should be a lot of fun watching the typical Entitlement WASPs partying up with the typical fat chicks on Fat Tuesday. So, pretty much a typical party night in Clarendon.

    • ClarendonKing

Jason, I am sure your underprivileged background has led you to be unaware of this, but WASPS do not “celebrate” either Mardi Grass or St. Patrick’s day.

      • Banksy

Then why are the Young Republicans having a “Fat Tuesday Happy Hour”? I find it hard to believe that there won’t be a single WASP there!

Lots of WASPS celebrate both Mardi Gras and St. Patrick’s Day…and Chinese New Year and Cinco de Mayo. It’s not like these holidays have real religious or ethnic significance in this country. It’s just an excuse to have a parade/get drunk/eat food that you normally don’t eat.

      • Jason S.

Binksy already covered it, it’s just an excuse for people to justify getting drunk, but now they can say it’s for a special occasion of some sort. Just have the guts to say you want to get really drunk and don’t give a damn about much else, except maybe impressing other unimpressive people.

        • Yep

          LOL Binksy.

          But right on.

      • mehoo

Uh, yeah, they do. They just don’t observe the actual holiday. But there were plenty of WASPs there last night partying it up.

    • mehoo

      Thanks for the video.

Ballou’s band was the best part, btw. But why couldn’t we find a single Arlington band to march?

      • Clarendude

I’m not sure if they were asked this year, but I do know that several years ago APS was asked and they declined and Ballou was enthusiastically on board and they are awesome. Besides, it’s kind of strange and it reminds me of when Clarendon was weird.

        • mehoo

Yep, Ballou was great, and I wouldn’t mind them coming back.
