Local soccer fans will be gathering at Clarendon Grill (1101 North Highland Street) tonight to mark the start of the 2011 Major League Soccer season.
DC United goalie Bill Hamid is expected to stop by and greet fans at the event, which is being organized by the Arlington Athletic and Social League. There will be gift bags for the first 50 fans who arrive, plus raffles for DC United opening day tickets (the game will be held on March 19 at RFK Stadium) and other memorabilia.
In addition to the soccer festivities inside, organizers plan to set up pick-up games of cornhole outside on the patio.
The event will be held from 6:00 to 9:00 p.m. Admission is free. It will be immediately followed by the start of the LA Galaxy vs. Seattle Sounders MLS opening night game on ESPN2.

I’m so psyched soccer season is starting. I hope to God this United team is good. They can’t be worse than last year!
Ditto, and if it matters, they were undefeated in pre-season play. I have high hopes…Vamos United!
Yes, but they played a bunch of college and lower league teams with the exception of a few games. The team has been revamped and I am really looking forward to seeing these new guys play. We need another winning team in DC other than the Caps!
All good points…and they need to stay in DC as well!
CD9!!! come on!
I thought the game was on ESPN not ESPN2?
I think it was on ESPN.
I don’t think I’ve ever seen a game on ESPN itself, they are almost always on 2 if they are shown nationally.
ESPN last night, but you are correct in that most are on 2.

Oh wow, on ESPN itself? Is MLS finally getting some respect?
ESPN had pretty good coverage and used the same commentary from the world cup
Yeah, except they still employ John Harkes. I liked him as a player for United but his commentating skills are horrendous.
Yes, I would say MLS is finally getting there. The Seattle fans are pretty incredible, as they sing and fill out the stadium for every game. I think the announcers said last night that the Seattle Sounders average more fans than 19 of the 32 major league BASEBALL teams. So in some cities, soccer is really catching on.
WOW you tools are drooling over a sport that is watched by dudes who live in their grandparents basement and have 200 gigs of porn on your computer.
Come on MLS! Its March Madness Basketball on the tube and you want to waste your time on this lame sport. The only time I watch soccer is when I can’t sleep at night. The only only reason why fans go nuts at these stupid ass games is because their BORD!!! so the best thing to do is beat the shit out of the opposing teams fans.
