by ARLnow.com | April 18, 2011 at 1:18 pm | 3,826 views | 40 Comments

Local Mexican restaurant chain Taqueria Poblano will opening a new location on Columbia Pike.

“Coming soon” signs are up on the ground floor of the Penrose Square development, at the corner of Columbia Pike and South Adams Street.

This will be Taqueria Poblano’s third location. It currently has restaurants in the Del Rey section of Alexandria and in North Arlington at 2503A N. Harrison St., off of Lee Highway.

  • For seriously.

A hat tip to John Antonelli? Are you serious? This has been posted in the penrose window for several days now. Pike Wire also wrote this up a while back. http://piketowncenter.com/2011/02/taqueria-poblano-in-negotiations-with-siena-park/ What’s the hat tip for ARLnow.com?

    • http://www.arlnow.com ARLnow.com

John pointed out that the signs were in the windows. Perhaps you missed it when we linked to Pike Wire’s earlier article, which only discussed ‘negotiations.’ http://www.arlnow.com/2011/02/21/morning-notes-173/

    • South Arlington

To be fair, I think Pike Wire only tweeted about the signs being up. They didn’t write an article about it.

John Antonelli sends out about a half dozen emails a day to the 22204 listserv going on about how he scooped the story, but the posters have been in the window for weeks now. He’s been bragging about noting the signs before anyone else and has been filling my inbox on this topic. ANNOYED!

      • Truthi

Every day?? A half dozen on this very topic? 365 days a year??? You poor dear, but I am incredulous

        • Enough-anelli

While the “half-dozen every day” figure is an exaggeration, it is firmly grounded in truth. The man uses the 22204 listserv as a personal soap box and regularly locks horns with other listerv participants on a myriad of issues. You should join it just for kicks. I’m on it in digest mode (once a week) and I would estimate that about 40-60% of all traffic is via his email address. The weekly emails I get are so long, due to his incessant pontification, that the content is clipped in Gmail. Really, it’s pretty remarkable.

Board meetings just aren’t the same without John…..

          • G. Clifford Prout

I agree. I provided some Saturday morning amusement. ARE THERE ANY QUESTIONS?

  • EB

WOOO! I love their tacos and their habanero sauce and rajas poblano! So excited!

  • South Arlington

Looking at the location, I was wondering if they’d have any outdoor seating. It’d be nice to get at least a few tables outside at this location. Possibly on the sidewalk between Siena Park and Penrose Square?

    • FedUp

I understand that they will have outdoor seating. Hopefully, the county’s zoning people will not mess with the owner like they do with so many…

    • (another) Greg

When Pike Wire first reported it, I was hoping they’d be in a space back off the Pike. I’m not sure there’s enough space on the sidewalk for seating. If there is, you’ll still be awfully close.

A minor disappointment, for sure, but a disappointment all the same.

The PikeWire story from February says:

“The restaurant also plans to have outdoor seating”

This is great. Love the evolution of the East end of the Pike.

    • FrenchyB

Outdoor seating areas are few and far-between on The Pike. If they have it, it’ll get plenty of use.

      • PikeHoo

True. Our current outdoor seating options seem to be outside 7-11s (name one).

        • South Arlington

I think the weird patio off of Manee Thai is sadly the only option.

    • South Arlington Ready

Yeah it is…When is it the West End’s turn? I’m sure the new housing project we are the lucky recipient of will make it a desired location for many restaurants…

  • YTK

Outdoor seating will be fun in the summer during rush hour when the buses come roaring by.

    • PikeHoo

Just think how much nicer it’ll be when there’s a street car.

  • PikeHoo

This will be my new go to for Pike dining. I love it.

  • Danielle

Does anyone else think this is the worst mexican food around? I love mexican food and particularly guacamole but could barely eat their guac – it tasted like there was Miracle Whip in it. I live close to the Harrison Street location and so wanted it to be good.

    • Truthi

I hate Mexican food but LOVE this place.

    • jdogg

Stick to the chips and salsa and the fish tacos

    • Lala

      IMO Worst Mexican=Mexicali

      • Jason S.

You beat me to it, Mexicali Blues is a travesty.

    • NPGMBR

Never tried Taqueria Poblano myself but looking forward to giving it a try as I life just two blocks from this new location. My favorite Mexican joints are Cactus Cantina (the much better Lauriol Plaza) and Guapo’s. So I hope Taqueria Poblana is good simply for the fact that it would be within walking distance of my apartment. Reviews I’ve read are mixed suggesting inconsistency in the quality of the food so we’ll see what happens.

    • YoBimbo

I love their L.A. Style tacos – and in fact, I don’t think of their menu as Mexican. They’re definitely Cal-Mex.

  • BoringDan

Just glad to see another option on the Pike. Good luck to them. Hopefully a Starbucks will be forthcoming.

    • Truthi

Nah, too many 7-11s and they have a non compete clause for coffee.

  • C

This place is awful. I went once and will never go back. Not one item ordered had any flavor. I was hoping for it to go out of business so a tastier replacement could come to the Harrison shopping center.

  • SoCo Resident

I hope they can lease all that new space there, especially for some unique restaurants and businesses.

    • FrenchyB

I’d really like to see the Cowboy Cafe return.

      • ArlRat

        Me Too!!!!!!!!!!!!!

      • (another) Greg

        +1

The Cowboy was the 10th gate to Hell.

  • Henry Spencer

Good, maybe it won’t be so overrun with children like the Lee-Harrison location.

    • YoBimbo

+1 That whole shopping area is the breeder equivalent of a stagnant water source for mosquitoes. I parked my car and had to wait 15 minutes for a shop to open. During that time, the side door of the mini-van next to me opened by itself and a woman loaded two toddlers into the back of it. It was immediately replaced with another mini-van that unloaded two more toddlers. I looked up and watched a very pregnant woman walk by with her two small children. No wonder there’s an ABC there.

  • Black Flag

I never seen some many people stressin about out door seats! I only carry if the food will be good.

  • Val

I hope they have the same caliber cook and staff as at Del Ray and not Lee-Harrison.

  • LBSki

Does anyone know what “coming soon” means? This summer perhaps? I walked past the other day and it looked like there was a lot of work to do.

  • ML

    Construction has started.
