Pete’s New Haven Apizza will begin its delivery service tomorrow.
As we reported last month, the restaurant will deliver pizzas via mopeds, cars and, for addresses within a mile of Pete’s Clarendon location, via Segway. Pete’s co-owner Joel Mehr called the restaurant’s custom-modified Segway “an extremely efficient way to deliver to urban residents.
At least at first, delivery will only be available in the evening, from 5:00 p.m. to close.
Pete’s opened nearly four months ago at 3017 Clarendon Boulevard. The restaurant’s phone number is 703.527.PETE.

All I can say is, if one of those damn things runs me over on the sidewalk, I want a coupon for one of their $30 pizzas
Not sure this is a good idea.
3-4 weeks until it is stolen
Is that when they start delivering in S. Arlington?
I saw someone from Pete’s puttering around on a segway Friday night. I guess it was just a publicity thing?
Yeah that was promotional.
driver training
Their pizza isn’t bad – and if you eat in, you can buy by the slice.
Agree – between that and Boylan soda’s I don’t mind eating there.
At least they actually use the mopeds and segues unlike another delivery company that claims they use pedibikes.
It’s a Honda Ruckus… a SCOOTER. there are no actual PEDALS on it. Just because something isn’t a Vespa or a Harley Davidson doesn’t mean it’s a MOPED.
This is like when Comic Book Guy gets all snippy because someone conflated the Green Lantern with the Green Hornet.
Yeah, jeez, who’s making the ruckus now?
Thank you for the public service. I honestly never knew what the difference between a scooter and a moped was. (And you can ignore the haters….)
Saw the same thing Thursday night. I thought they were already delivering.
Oh, and the pizza is REALLY good.
Without having a real coal fired oven, Pete’s s not exactly Sally’s or Pepe’s, but it is pretty darn good!
According to Pete’s, coal is not required:

(scroll down)
Pete can say what he wants, and he makes a darn good apizza, but the coal fired oven is what the ORIGINAL New Haven Style is still made wth.
Is it seriously pronounced “ah-peetz”? If so, what is the derivation of the spelling and pronunciation, please.
Good question. It’s pronounced ah’BEETZ. It’s a term used by Italian Americans in the New Haven area to refer to pizza. We believe it is derived from the Neopolitan dialect where they often drop the last vowel off of their words. Re: coal vs wood or gas, Sally’s and Pepe’s still use coal but Modern hasn’t since the 1950s, and none of the other (less famous but no less original) apizza shoppes use coal. We’re looking forward to a real coal-fired pizza place opening in downtown Bethesda soon. Should be fun to try the coal-fired stuff locally.
At $25 a pizza, they’ll have that segway paid for in a few weeks.
A $100 bicycle with a pizza rack would seem to be a much more cost effective way to get around an urban environment a mile from the store. Prepare for pizza prices to rise to cover the $5K per Segway.
.
The bike could fall over and your cheese will slide off, but the Segway is a technological marvel that will save your pie.
We’re not going to raise our prices.
Any chance they will deliver to Donaldson Run? Seriously.
Probably not – it rains too much there for safe Segway use.
Agreed. Still a pity, though.
Donaldson Run is just outside the delivery area, which is bounded by Interstate 66 on the north and Glebe Road on the west.
The douche level in Arlington, just went up in Clarendon.
what makes them a douche? Douche would be delivering pizza in an SUV. It’s pretty efficient as long as it doesn’t get stolen.
How could that possibly be efficient or cost effective?
By charging an average of $30 for a pizza that is mostly crust.
I wish people would stop using the term”douche” its getting old now.
Thank you. I wonder if many of you even know what a douchebag is (was–they were used, misguidedly, way way back in the day).
If you hang out in Clarendon, you know what a douchebag is.
Stop watching Jersey Shore. That’s where u got it from. Please grow up.
Yeah that probably where they got it from. Select some new word please.
These replys are pretty Douchey too!
Cornball.
“gay” means “happy” AND “homosexual” AND “lame”.
remember when parents were up-in-arms about “bad” meaning “good”??
No.
I really like Pete’s, but Segways blow.
I like the soda and the patio… the pizza is just OK.
I have high hopes for Bronx Pizza… whenever that’s going to open.
New Haven Pizza > Bronx/New York Pizza
Do you mean the style?
Of course, both are once great cities that fell on hard times, but are slowly reviving themselves. New Haven by Yale University, and the Bronx by people sick of paying Manhattan rents.
Now I’m confused… the style of Pizza is better or the city is better?
I would say neither.
Also Pete’s should be cheaper. I like how they devote one page of their site to why their pizza costs more than you think it should, and list their excuses.
I hope Bronx does $2 slices of decent NY style.
Cities are equal, but New Haven Apizza is superior to NY style Pizza.
It is like comparing steak to hamburger.
So Bronx pizza will be buying Pete’s pies, chopping them up, forming them into patties and grilling them over an open flame? My god, that actually sounds delicious.
I’ll be interested when they finally offer jet pack delivery.
Come back to bed, George.
Sophisticated, costly technology (in this case, Segway) usually trumps basic, inexpensive methods (in this case, bike with rake), at least initially. Then comes the day of performance and cost reckoning.
The good old days weren’t always so good. But some aspects of those days have enduring utility and valve.
I am not sure if this will be a success…I just know Advanced Towimg is going to figure out a way to haul that Segway away and charge 85 bucks to get it back. You heard it here first.
word.
