The second month to be named after a Roman emperor (the other is July), there’s a lot to like about August.
It’s sort of like summer’s grand finale — when folks begin packing in the remaining warm weather fun on their ‘To Do’ list before the arrival of shorter days and cooler nights.
What’s your favorite thing about this month?

Since the kids don’t go back to school in Arlington until September, I doubt you’ll get a lot of votes for that option….
The kids in the “year-round” elementary schools have already gone back, I think.
True, but it could include those heading back to college, or just the anticipation of the start of school.
Least favorite thing about August – the return of local media’s over-coverage of the Redskins.
+1
I dread football season.
You sound like another of those darned Cowboys fans!!!
Hopefully this year the Redskins [notwithstanding Snyder!] will get back into playoff contention and put the “Plowboys” back where they belong—last place in the NFC East!
Some years (not this one) college football starts.
I don’t see any “return” of the Tater cover. It’s relentless 24/7/365.
is it really going to start cooling down? PLEASE!!!
Yes, just in time for the county fair too.
Seriously!!! I loathe summer and the hot weather/humidity.
Personally, I find August to be one of the most unlikable months of the year. The novelty of summer has worn off, we’ve had our fill of beaches, ice cream, cookouts, and other summery things. There are no holidays from work. The sun gives us one last big middle finger, blasting us into oblivion with extreme temperatures. The sports doldrums continue, as the football is crappy preseason activity and the baseball season drags uselessly on before approaching its end. It’s still too hot to dine outside, and the last waves of tourists descend upon the city.
Now September, that’s another story.
My favorite thing about August is the beginning of slip lane removal on S. Arlington Ridge Road.
Not that I really give a rat’s ass about the actual slip lane, I just like seeing disingenuous people (whose real anger is that their neighbor got a free circular driveway instead of them) not get their way after lying about the County not giving them a voice in the issue.
September
Actually, I like that my Clarendon pool is still open (it will close again on Labor day, for shame!)

+1…best thing about August is that September comes when it ends.
I love the long days of summer.
And it looks as though July will have been our big stinker, with some pleasant weather ahead for the time being.
It seems like whenever we get an unusually hot July, August is cooler. And vice versa.
August in DC: listening to Redskins players and coaches talking about how they have to execute this year, and how things will be different.
Washinton Redskins going to the Sooper Bowl!!!!
Seriously, perhaps the best part of being one of the dreaded “transients” is that your emotional wellbeing doesn’t depend at all upon the success of this woeful group of overpaid failures.
Plenty of locals (myself included) have given up on them as well.
My favorite thing about August is the continued work yet seeming lack of progress on the west end of Columbia Pike.
Speaking of continued work yet seeming lack of progress – what is up with how long it is taking to build the third lane on 66 between Fairfax and Sycamore? I think they have a crew of about five……
Agreed. I’m no expert of traffic engineering, but it seems like it shouldn’t be taking THIS long. If I remember right, they started that project and the Dulles metro project around the same time, didn’t they?

I think VDOT knows how much the widening aggravates Zimmerman and they are just prolonging his agony.
I think I’d find it more bearable if it was still called Sextilis. At least I’d giggle each time the complaint “Sextilis is so hot!” was uttered.
Congress – and all that goes with them – is gone!!!
August = county fairs and Fall is coming
