Crime Report: …in the Back Edition

In this week’s Arlington County crime report, police say a man in the Columbia Forest neighborhood was stabbed in the back by young woman after he refused to give her money to buy drugs.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING-ARREST, 08/24/11, 1000 block of S. Frederick Street. On August 24 at 5:30 am, a woman stabbed a man in the back when he refused to give her money to buy narcotics. The two people were acquainted. Melissa Diaz Marty, 21, of Arlington, was charged with Malicious Wounding and Possession of Cocaine. She was held without bond.

On Monday, a woman walking down the street in the Westover area was hit in the back by an egg thrown from a passing vehicle.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY, 08/29/11, 5700 block of N. 16th Street. On August 29 at 8:30 pm, a woman was walking when an unknown subject threw an egg at her from a passing vehicle. The egg struck her in the back. The suspect vehicle is described as a dark colored four-door sedan.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING BY MOB, 08/26/11, 4400 block of S. 31st Street. On August 26 at 11 pm, a group of unknown men assaulted two brothers with a stick and a metal pole. The suspects are described as white Hispanic males.
ROBBERY, 08/27/11, 4200 block of Wilson Boulevard. On August 27 at midnight, an unknown man confronted a man inside an ATM alcove. The suspect implied a weapon and demanded the victim withdraw money from the ATM. The victim complied and the suspect fled. He is described as an African American male wearing a white t-shirt and jeans.

ATTEMPT SEXUAL ASSAULT, 08/27/11, 1800 block of N. Veitch Street. On August 26 at 11:50 pm, two women were walking when an unknown man ran up to them. He knocked one woman to the ground covering her head with his blue plaid shirt. The suspect pulled at her shirt and asked for sex. The second female ran and called police. The suspect is described as an African American male in his late 20’s and 5’10”. He was wearing a white t-shirt and carrying his other shirt.

SEXUAL BATTERY, 08/26/11, 1700 block of N. Quinn Street. On August 26 at 11:20 pm, a woman was walking when an unknown man ran up and grabbed her buttocks. The suspect was a man in his 30’s with a dark complexion, 5’10” with a thin build. He was wearing a blue or green plaid button up shirt. This suspect is similar in description to the above incident.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY-ARREST, 08/26/11, 1000 block of S. Walter Reed Drive. On August 26 at 1:45 am, two intoxicated men ran around banging on cars waiting at a traffic light. When two owners got out of the vehicles, the men assaulted them. James Rogers, 27, of Arlington, and Joshua Christenson, 27, of Tampa, FL, were charged with Assault and Battery and Drunk in Public. They were each held on a $2,500 bond.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY, 08/27/11, 3300 block of Fairfax Drive. On August 27 at 2 am, two brothers were assaulted by the irate ex-boyfriend of a female friend. The suspect is known.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY-ARREST, 08/27/11, 2100 block of S. Quebec St. On August 27 at 5 pm, a man assaulted his roommate over an argument about the television. Gualberto Flores, 54, of Arlington, was charged with Assault and battery. He was released on a summons.

ASSAULT AND BATTERY-ARREST, 08/28/11, 4200 block of Fairfax Drive. On August 28 at 7 pm, a man assaulted another man outside a convenience store. Mario Lewis, 52, of Arlington, was charged with Assault and Battery. He was released on his own recognizance.

BURGLARY, 08/29/11, 1300 block of N. Veitch Street. Between noon on August 12, and noon on August 26, an unknown person entered an apartment and stole various items. There are no known suspects.

BURGLARY, 08/30/11, 2100 block of N. Pierce Street. Between 3 pm on August 28, and 11 pm on August 30, an unknown person entered an apartment and stole various items. There are no known suspects.

ATTEMPT BURGLARY, 08/25/11, 500 block of S. 15th Street. Between 10 pm on August 24, and 7:45 am on August 25, an unknown subject attempted to enter an apartment. There is no suspect description.

ATTEMPT BURGLARY, 08/27/11, 200 block of N. Piedmont St. On August 27 at 3 am, a young woman heard a noise at her apartment window and looked outside. She saw an unknown man pushing up the screen to gain access to the window. She hit the window and the suspect fled. He was a white Hispanic male in his late 20’s, 5’5″ and 170 lbs. He was wearing an orange t-shirt and a baseball cap.

DESTRUCTION OF PROPERTY (SERIES), 08/27/11, 1000 block of S. Frederick Street. Between 10:30 pm on August 26, and 10:30 am on August 27, an unknown subject put deep scratches on at least four vehicles in the same block. There is no suspect description.

The STEAM Workforce Development Teacher Fellowship provides Arlington Public Schools (APS) high school, middle school, and elementary school teachers with opportunities to learn about workplace needs in STEAM-related fields and for them to use the experience to enhance student learning to match workplace expectations in a selected industry. STEAM Fellows participate in a three-week summer fellowship, receiving a $4,000 stipend upon completion.

Applicants planning to pursue a fellowship in the arts must demonstrate how they will build connections between the arts and science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
