(Updated at 4:55 p.m.) More than 2,500 Dominion customers are without power in the Crystal City area this afternoon.
Numerous traffic lights are reported to be dark in the area. Police are beginning to direct traffic at certain intersections.
According to a Dominion map, the power outage appears to be centered in Alexandria, where more than 7,100 Dominion customers are said to be without power.

I guess all those dorks from the convention must have been playing WoW at the same time and overloaded the grid.
Ours went out briefly (Arlington Forest).
I’ll bet the substation that went down had an automatic transmission.
No outage at long branch creek.
Traffic lights are out at the intersection of S. Eads and S, Glebe. Police are on hand supposedly directing traffic, but they weren’t actually doing that. The lights on the police cars were flashing, which helps to warn drivers and cyclists that the lights are out.
Be careful if you’re heading in that direction. Better yet, avoid that intersection until power is restored.

Too many people forget or don’t know that a dead traffic light is to be treated like a stop sign. That makes driving really dangerous. Be nice if the police were there to TICKET people who speed through… hello, Once again lax Arlington misses revenue for the County.
