Obama, Iraqi Leader Visit Arlington Nat’l Cemetery

President Obama, Vice President Biden and Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki made a joint visit to Arlington National Cemetery this afternoon.

Maliki and the president participated in a wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns, to honor American troops killed in Iraq. The visit coincides with the planned exit of nearly all U.S. troops from Iraq by the end of this month.

Traffic was blocked in the area of the Memorial Bridge during the roughly 30 minute visit. Arlington County police assisted with the closures.

I’ve never understood the logic of standing guard with a weapon that has no ammo. That M-14 has no clip in it. Either they trust our soldiers or they do not.

These guys are honor guards, not security guards – there’s no need for them to carry rifles with loaded magazines (not clips).

      • Taylor

They keep ammo in the guard station. These are real guards. If you try to get close or disrespect the tomb in any way they will deal with you accordingly.

I didn’t mean to imply that The Sentinels are window dressing; they’re clearly not. Just pointing out that even highly trained and extremely disciplined soldiers don’t carry hot weapons when there isn’t a valid reason.

Is not guarding the Tomf of the Unknowns incredibly important? It’s one of the most hallowed grounds in America. That doesnt’ warrant carrying ammo? If not, then just holding this gun poses unecessary risk. Could accidentally have a round left in it. He’s marching around with the action closed.

      novasteve,
      1) Slap yourself for calling a mag a clip.
      2) Go to youtube and search “Tomb Guard” and “Challenge.”
      3) There is likely forcepro ammo in the guard shack, if they opt not to finish a threat with the bayonet.

      • Taylor

Exactly kev. I work at Arlington everyday as a ceremonial guard. I see this stuff every day.

      • drax

Wasn’t there a big debate about mag vs. clip like three years ago on ArlNow?

        • Zoning Victim

If it’s the same one I remember, it was right after Gabrielle Giffords was shot because everybody was debating about how many bullets a clip should hold. Apparently, using the word “clip” when talking about a “cartridge clip,” which is actually in the dictionary as one of the definitions of the word “clip,” means you should slap yourself because you are not a real gun guy if you don’t say magazine instead (even though everybody still knows what you are talking about). I will now have to slap myself twice because I used the work “bullet,” when everybody knows a cartridge goes in a cli… err… magazine.

          • KalashniKEV

It is entirely appropriate to use the word “clip” when discussing en blocs and strippers, but not for a magazine. Google it it you’re interested in learning more.

Well that’s nice. I wonder how long it’ll be until a US president visits the graves of any of the hundreds of thousands of Iraqis who are dead today because of us.

I’m guessing it won’t be anytime soon.

    • Zoning Victim

Or maybe he could visit the million people that are dead because of Saddam, but if he did any of those things he’d be labeled a Muslim, again.

    • KalashniKEV

Don’t look for 0bama to do it.

      • drax

Why would he? Bush started the war. Obama’s ending it.

        • Zoning Victim

I’m not sure how basically being thrown out of Iraq by the Iraqi government’s refusal to grant the troops immunity equates to Obama ending the war when he was negotiating to stay. If he wants to impress everybody with his alleged anti-war policies, he can pull-up stakes in Afghanistan and bail out of that endless mess, which would actually be a choice he purposefully made that he could legitimately say was all his.

Funny how Obama took Maliki to Arlington yesterday and today in the Wapo there was a full page ad calling him a Murderer, paid for by supporters Iranian dissidents in Iraq. They show a pic of Maliki shaking hands with Ahadmenijad.
