Update at 12:20 p.m. — The ‘all clear’ has been given, according to Arlington County Fire Department spokesman Capt. Gregg Karl.

Blue Line trains are bypassing the Arlington Cemetery Metro station due to a suspicious package outside the station.

U.S. Park Police, Metro Transit Police and the Arlington County Fire Marshal’s Office are investigating the package, which was reported at some point before 11:00 a.m.

Metro spokesman Dan Stessel said via Twitter that shuttle bus service is operating from Arlington Cemetery station to the Rosslyn Metro station.

      Thank you.

is this like frogger — trains can go by and if the suspicious package goes off at the right time you advance to the next level? aren’t things prone to ignite based on rumbling and movement? i don’t see why 100′s of people can go by on the train and be only feet away …

How do you know how far it is? And are you an expert in EOD?

well everyone here at arlnow is an expert on everything — haven’t you noticed? it isn’t like we are in the back bay or something.

i have no idea. but how can the station be safe for trains to run thru but not have people in it. wouldn’t the whole place be at risk?

        • thecharlesriver

Not necessarily. It depends on how big the package is…..which would determine how much weight the potential explosive is…..and would give an idea of how far the blast would affect the measured area. I’m not an EOD expert, nor a civil engineer, but I know that much….and you certainly can’t assess it from online, which is why I trust the professionals we’ve hired to do that up close and personal.

    Heh. Package

My question is sincere about what is or isn’t at risk. Curious.

As I said, that depends on what the hell you’re dealing with for a suspicious package. Is is a brown lunch bag? Or is it a piece of roll on luggage? Your question cannot be answered based on the information provided. However, that’s why there are public safety professionals to make those assessments……at scene…..not from online at ArlNOW.
