Valentine’s Day is on Tuesday. To avoid ending up in the dog house, now would be a good time to secure some plans with your loved one. While Arlington offers a plethora of options for celebrating, here are just a few to consider for this weekend and the big day on Tuesday.

  • Celebrate with the traditional holiday staples of wine and chocolate at Screwtop Wine Bar (1025 N. Fillmore St). The Sweetheart Tasting on Saturday includes tastes of French and Italian wines and four stations of cheese, chocolates, cupcakes and charcuterie. Participants also get a box of chocolates to take home. Runs from 3:00-5:00 p.m. and costs $49.99 per person (discount for wine club members). Call 703-888-0845 for reservations.
  • Aroma Indian Restaurant (4052 Campbell Ave) is hosting a “Love Bites Valentine’s Night” on Saturday, starting at 8:30 p.m. The bash boasts of a DJ, champagne toast, contests and prizes, cash bar and unlimited food with admission. Tickets cost $75 for a couple and $40 for singles.
  • Make your date laugh with a night of comedy at Arlington Cinema & Drafthouse (2903 Columbia Pike). The evening starts with stand-up comedy about relationships, then moves on to a showing of “The Princess Bride.” Tickets are $8. The 7:00 p.m. event is sold out, but there are still spots available for the 9:50 p.m. event. An optional wine tasting is also available for an additional cost.
  • Learn how to whip up some romantic dishes at Sur La Table (1101 S. Joyce St) during a cooking class. The “Breakfast in Bed” class runs on Sunday and Tuesday from 11:00 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. The class is $69.00 per person and can be booked online.
  • Take in some romantic tunes while picking out last minute gifts at Market Common (2700 Clarendon Blvd). A guitarist, violinist and accordionist will play classic love songs while strolling from store to store from 2:00-4:00 p.m. on Saturday. Several stores will offer deals or discounts on merchandise.
  • Surprise your special someone with a singing telegram. From Sunday through Tuesday, a women’s quartet from the Potomac Harmony Chorus will deliver two songs, a card and a box of candy. Today is the last day to order, by calling 703-764-3896. Options and pricing can be found online.
  • Join the Opera Guild of Northern Virginia for its “That’s Amore Valentine’s Day Concert” at 4301 Wilson Blvd. Doors open at 6:00 p.m. for refreshments and shopping, concert starts at 7:00 p.m. Suggested donations for advance tickets and for walkups are available online.

I have been married for over 25 years and have the VDay deal down pat! Each year I tell my wife to look through her jewelry magazines and pick out the one gift she really wants and cut out the picture. THEN she needs to slip it under her pillow the night before VDay……and hope it shows up! If it doesn’t show up, then I guess there is no Santa Clause! It works better than an April Fools……….now about THAT holiday, I have a few more great ideas that work also!….by the way, I plan on spending Vday night on the couch!

    • Good Grief

You really are the one that got away..

      • Mickey

It really works…..I even oil myself up for the big day…..that works too!….at least for me.

  • JamesE

This year is just going to be me and Skyrim.

    • Tina

An arrow to your knee, buster.

  • Roy

I have the perfect idea for a valentine’s surprise. Come to the Lyon Park Community House Saturday night for an old fashioned Valentine’s Swing Dance at 7:30 pm. Tickets are $20 and include
dance lessons, delicious food and fun music. For more details email Kim Franklin at franklin_kim@bah.com. You will not want to miss this!

So basically this article serves to reiterate that Arlington is laughably lacking in the high end restaurant department. There is not one place in the County where I would do a fancy V-day dinner.

    • SoMuchForSubtlety

      What about Eventide?

      • JamesE

possibly willow, but I wouldn’t rate either of those two as high end

        • CW

Willow is very tasty but not particularly innovative, and it doesn’t get a lot of press. Eventide has been erratic over the past year or so and I wouldn’t trust them with a special occasion.

        • drax

          Eventide is high end.

    • JamesE

      Arbys

      • South Awwwlington

        dueces.

    • South Awwwlington

Go to Old Town. At least it has character.

      • Southeast Jerome

Just stay away from the waterfront. They dont want ANY MORE PEOPLE.

    • Andrew

Ray’s the Steaks or Tagolio works for us.

    • not your bro

I would say it also reiterates that Screwtop, while a really lovely establishment, is REALLY overpriced for what it is. They seem to be doing good business, though, so more power to ‘em.

  • Roy

You are wrong! There is a place in Clarendon that is worthy of a fancy Valentine outing! Head to the Lyon Park Community House at 414 N Fillmore street at 7 pm, for a wonderful Valentine’s day swing dance. You will not be disappointed! It will be lovely. Contact Event honcho Kim Franklin at franklin_kim@bah.com to make sure you get your tickets. The dance instructors are as good or better than the folks on Dancing with the Stars!

    • Andrew

Dude, we heard you the first time.

      • drax

I don’t know about you guys, but I have a sudden urge to go to a place in Clarendon that is worthy of a fancy Valentine outing at the Lyon Park Community House at 414 N Fillmore street at 7 pm, for a wonderful Valentine’s day swing dance. I will not be disappointed! It will be lovely.

  • Why is that laughable?

Does high end mean high priced? Because certainly we have some excellent restaurants. The last two presidents have eaten at our burger joints and Mexican cantinas, respectively. Not haute cuisine, but delicious. (Although El Paso has changed; what’s with their chips now? But I digress.)

The restaurant situation in Arlington is well matched to the gorgeous residential polyglot. We have a wide range of residents, from military to civil servants, young professionals who live here and work in DC, federal and state government employees, nonprofits, merchants and businesses of all sorts. But this is not Manhattan, nor do I think most who live here would expect it to be. There are few hedge fund managers, movie stars or the like living among us, I believe.

Eventide is about as “high end” as we need and frankly who’s not also happy eating a great sushi plate, a good Vietnamese or Indian or Cambodian meal, or the presidents’ choices (El Paso and Ray’s Hellburger)? If you need something “high[er] end,” drive 10 minutes into DC and knock yourself out at Citronelle or Nora.

    • CW

I think you missed the point. Actually, several points, with your shotgun blast of a response – all over the place. All I was saying was that Arlington lacks haute cuisine or anything that would be considered innovative, cutting-edge, or noteworthy. In neighboring jurisdictions examples would be 2941 (though I hear it’s declined) or Vermillion. Eventide, yes, is the closest thing we have, but I’ve heard erratic and less than stellar things coming out of it for the past year of so.

No, I was not saying that this is what is required for a Valentine’s dinner. What I was saying was that, if someone wanted to do a high-end dinner to impress his or her Valentine, they would be S.O.L. in Arlington.

I was also not saying that one cannot drive over to D.C. Yes, this is what I myself usually do.

Yes, I myself am happy with indian and vietnamese food; I almost always eat at the lower end of the spectrum cost-wise because my money goes much further and the flavors are great. I find the high end of the restaurant scene in D.C. to be terribly underwhelming and aimed solely at satisfying the egos of those who are spending expense account money. As far as bang for the buck at the $$$-$$$$ end of the market, I think your dollar goes further in Manhattan, actually.

I disagree with your assertion that Arlington could not support high cuisine establishments. A comparison between the demographics of Arlington and the demographics of high end diners would show almost perfect alignment, I’d think.

      • Good Grief

        Pollo Rico it is

When did Valentine’s day become a week long celebration? It used to just be celebrated on the actual 14th.

Don’t get me wrong–any reason to drink booze and eat chocolate, e.g., any night of the week, is never a bad thing!

    • Roy

In Lyon Park everyday is Valentine’s Day!

      • Arlingtonian

Roy, I don’t even know you but I’m being absolutely serious – you are delightful.

        • Quoth the Raven

          +1

        • Maria

Agreed. Nobody ever seems to be happy on here anymore! Thanks Roy!

          • Roy

You all made my day! Thanks and hope to see you all on Saturday night and if not then at another fun event sometime soon. Thanks again.
