Update at 4:30 p.m. — The “all clear” has been given and roads have been opened back up.

Police are shutting down Washington Boulevard in both directions between I-395 and Route 110.

Initial reports suggest the road is being closed at the request of the Pentagon due to a suspicious package at the 9/11 Memorial. The Arlington County bomb squad is assisting with the incident.

The county is advising motorists to seek an alternate route.

    Scary!

And so what was the explosion in/near Shirlington around 4pm yesterday? We were in nearby Jennie Dean park. And why did ArlNow remove the comment from yesterday’s poster asking the same thing? There was a lot of black smoke, though, oddly, no sirens or anything could be heard.

      Suspicious package being “disrupted”?

You didn’t hear or see anything….
Repeat after me…”I saw and heard nothing”……

Now don’t you feel better ??

Also, there is a Fire Department training facility near Shirlington, so if they were doing something like car fire training you may hear booms from tires exploding and also see smoke. If I had to guess… that is what I would guess it was.

Thank you. That sounds like a reasonable explanation. I guess that residents of nearby neighborhoods must be aware of that type of activity, but those of who travel from other parts of the county are not necessarily in the know. Following two back-to-back reports of suspicious packages, it was unsettling, to say the least. To top it all off, when many of us arrived at the park, there was a policeman in full protective gear, assembling a rather large gun. presumably unrelated, I’m guessing, but at the time it sure added to the mystery of what was going on.
