Man Stabbed During Street Fight Near Columbia Pike

(Updated at 4:30 p.m.) A man nearly died after being stabbed multiple times with a broken beer bottle early this morning.

The incident happened around 1:00 a.m. on the 1200 block of S. Scott Street, in front of the Wellington apartments, near Columbia Pike. Police say seven men had been drinking when a fight broke out between two of them in the middle of the street.

During the fight, one of the men was stabbed multiple times with a broken beer bottle. The man suffered stab wounds to his groin, leg and throat, and an arterial cut to his arm. The latter wound gushed blood, and police say all seven men were covered in blood by the time officers arrived on scene.

Officers arrived, secured the scene, and quickly applied a tourniquet to the wounded man, likely saving his life, according to Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck.

The victim was transported to George Washington University Hospital in critical but stabilized condition. Three other men were treated and released from Virginia Hospital Center. Among them, one man required stitches above the eye and staples to the head to close lacerations caused by a beer bottle.

Two men have been charged with assault by mob, Sternbeck said. Another man, 27-year-old Onon Turmandakh of Arlington, was charged with malicious wounding and assault by mob.

I don’t even have to say anything, ’cause you already know.

    • Mary-Austin

These days you never know on Columbia Pike…It could be Trevor and company involved.

      • JamesE

Trevor had to relocate down there after paying his legal fees.

  • North Arlington Man

Lets make it easier for Columbia Pike to get to North Arlington

    • KalashniKEV

What… you mean like move them to Clarendon and pay half their rent?

That would get things VIBRANT up here!
      (quicker than is already happening)

KEV, I doubt the Baffler is up your alley, but the latest issue has a piece all about our favorite bogus cliche.

  • Good Grief

Bloody week for South Arlington, and its only Monday..

  • JamesE

This would not have happened if they had a streetcar

    • confused

      You just may be right

    • http://facebook.com/johnjiangisawesome JohnJiangisAwesome

      ironically, you are right

  • Ralph

They need to install some bollards on Columbia Pike.

  • ARLing

I count 11 crimes in N.Arl to 14 in S.Arl. by the crime map.

    • ARLing

If you want to get specific .. 6 along the pike, 9 along the orange line. Looks like N. Arl is SO much safer.

      • CW

What were the crimes specifically? Gotta make sure you’re not comparing pit bull bites to collie nibbles, since the posters on the dog thread would have you believe a crime is a crime (just like a dog bite is a dog bite).

        • JamesE

An english bulldog robbed a bank in Virginia Square.

          • CW

I heard several witnesses were taken to the hospital due to cuteness overexposure.

          • Arlingtonian

This made me laugh my @$$ off … thank you, I needed it

          • Boom! Roasted

            lol

        • Dude Where’s My Car

I thought we were supposed to “Take a Bite out of Crime?” Are you saying bites ARE crimes?!?

        • ARLing

Since Jan 1 2012, there seems to be more black icons than blue in N.Arl by an eyeball of the crime map. Also there were 4 crimes involving gunshots to people – ALL in N.Arl. By rough count – 98 total crimes in N.Arl vs 108 in S.Arl (which includes The Pike, Pentagon City, Crystal City).

          • CW

            Bad times!

I have always been surprised that N. Arlington does not see more “crime tourism” given the number of high-value targets. Especially property crime. Steal and then run back across the river where MPD will do nothing.

          • Thurston Howell III

What, lovey? The great unwashed aren’t targeting us?? Certainly, I’m WORTHY of being robbed.

  • South Awwlington

Does this qualify as gang related activity? I’d welcome seeing cops on every corner on Columbia Pike.

    • SoArl

Me too. The activities around here the last few weeks make me want to move.

      • Mary-Austin

This kind of thing has been going on here for 20 years. Why did you move here in the first place?

        • SoArl

It’s where I could afford to buy pre-housing crash, if you must know. Why are you so defensive?

          • South Awwlington

lol it’s were we could afford to buy, without government assistance. God forbid.

          • Mary-Austin

I don’t think there’s any threat to you. If there is maybe the streetcar will save you.
Things will be so much better with drunken bros instead of drunken putos

          • SoArl

My, my. You’re a bitter one!

        • Sherriff Gonna Getcha

Well- its not just S. Arlington people. Look at Ballston Mall and the area around the Metro and Bus station. They need more foot patrol and enforcement to create a safer feel with police around.

Rather than having patrol cars sit and wait for people to make a right on red at washington and kirkwood or run a red light at fairfax and glebe. It brings in revenue, great. But are they using that revenue to add more patrols to shady areas??? No. Thats why I am against it.

          • happycyclist

Running reds never kills people, of course, or making illegal right turns.

        • tumblebum

It was a lot worse 25-30 years ago. Crime is essentially 1/2 of what is was.

          • SoArl

This summer just seems like its been particularly bad. You know, the $10 hookers, etc.

          • GropeOn

$10? Now THAT was Living Social

        • South Awwlington

Mary-Austin: This kind of thing has been going on here for 20 years. Why did you move here in the first place?

Me: So that makes it acceptable? Um, ok.

        • confused

gentrification and densification in arlington has been going on for over 20 years. So time to quit complaining about it?

    • Manana

So it will look like your home country?

      • South Awwlington

        No pero. Donde vives?

    • KalashniKEV

Hmmm… You mean like Saturation Policing for a few random weekends per quarter?
(This is what needs to happen!)

  • Frank

Time to ban glass beer bottles. Everyone knows they are only made to be used in fighting situations.

What with plastic water bottles, why would anyone ever need a glass beer bottle?

    • novasteve

Funny, many places that are “progressive” are seriously considered banning bottle water because of the plastic bottles.

    • ly my dear

There are no bad bottles, only bad drinkers.

    • Buckwheat

      Glass keeps beer cold longer!

How else can we keep the mountains blue on Coors Light?

      • CW

        False.

        http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_thermal_conductivities

The fact that the beer feels colder in your hand is a bad thing if you’re trying to actually keep it cold.

        • Zen of Zin

Buck doesn’t know from cold beer or anything else. He’s an apologist for his relative the owner of Grateful Red. ’nuff sed.

        • Buckwheat

Interesting complicated standardized chart! I’m sure densities being equal, plastic does have better insulating properties, but my Coors Light bottle is much more dense than my Fiji plastic water bottle.

No relation to the owner of Grateful Red. I just enjoy their wines. Great French white called Vouvray to celebrate Bastille Day Saturday. No I’m not French either.

    • CW

My bottles were designed and engineered for hundreds of years to specifically seek out and cut people. Sometimes they fly off of my table and cut people before I can even do anything about it. But it is my right to have them, since there is no such thing as a bad bottle.

      • happycyclist

people who drink beer in bottles need to be licensed, to have certified training in safe drinking, and to carry liability insurance.

      • J-arl

You may want to check whether you’re actually refuting the point you’re trying to make through “clever” use of “irony.”

    • novasteve

I think they should also mandate people wear bibs when they eat italian food with red sauces. lots of people have lost their lives from getting red stains on their shirts from italian food.

Midwestern migrants may recall that the Kroger grocery nearest to OSU’s campus in Columbus would not sell glass bottled beer from Thurs-Sun. Maybe they still don’t.
