An out-of-control car crashed into the deck/patio area of a house in Lyon Park last night.

The incident happened around 6:30 p.m. The driver of the hatchback Subaru somehow lost control of the vehicle on a quiet, residential portion of 5th Street N., near the intersection with Pershing Drive. The car hopped a low curb and crashed into a wooden fence, damaging it.

Initial reports suggest the driver of the vehicle was transported to the hospital for non-life-threatening injuries.

    Automatic, using cellphone.

    • Dude Where’s My Car

That is the ArlNow version of posting “FIRST!!!”

though you’re right. probably a flip-flop flopped loose and wedged under the accelerator pedal too. that’s why these things never happen in the dead of winter.

      • ian mckellan

that is actually a serious problem

I drive barefoot whenever I’m wearing flip-flops for that very reason

  • Ashton Heights

People constantly speed around Pershing, and the side streets including Lincoln, Monroe, Jackson, etc. I hope this person is permanently injured. Let is be a lesson for all of you out there.

      Yikes

    • Ellen

Supreme hater. Unfortunate. You don’t have any idea what happened and your unfortunate knee jerk reaction is ugly.

Yes, hoons that are competent launch into backyard pools or public fountains.

    • Dezlboy

      What’s a hoon?

Gosh, I was looking for the Arlington County Bluebook Manual!

The wreckless driving in Lyon Park has got to stop! Twenty somethings driving 30+ on residential streets. My husband was almost t-boned at 9th Street and Garfield last Friday night. Young woman went right through a stop sign going at least 30 mph and had the nerve to ask my husband if HE had a driving license.

As a younger resident who drives, there is nothing more annoying than hearing from the know-it-all elders of the area who assume that you’re speeding. When I was a student at Yorktown I was told to “Slow the f*ck down!” on more than one occasion when I was doing the speed limit, or under it, near the school. Granted, in your situation, the female driver was obviously at fault, but in general, people under the age of 30 are assumed to be at fault when it is just grouchy old people trying to rain on your parade.

That intersection should be a 4 way stop – folks short cut at speed from Washington right down 9th St to Highland to avoid the 10th st intersection, There should be a stop on 9th st not just garfield.

    • YTK

      Reckless, definitely not Wreckless <;-)
i agree with you 100 % — they don;t care — I was almost run over by an idiot driving a Bimmer who careened out of a parking garage and roared down 9th street..

      • VPI

Who needs a Benz when you got a BEAMER!

        • YTK

          Benz? What a Bummer!!

  • Tom

    Driving a Subaru…

    • Tom

Oh. Yep, was indeed driving a Subaru!

      • Dezlboy

I don’t understand the Subaru joke? Please explain, I’m fairly new to Arlington, and wish to know all the inside scoops!

  • LB

The TomTom must have told them to turn right…

  • YTK

    Shoulda taken the trolley

  • Roycroft

That is a small back street one over from Pershing. Not sure how she managed to end up in that persons yard?

  • YTK

    Heard JUST before the crash:
    “Wheee! Whee Whee! Whee!!!”

  • Gymmyray

There is a lot more traffic in Arlington and common courtesy is disappearing quickly.

  • assumption police

She? where does it say the driver was female?

    • assumption police

supposed to be reply to Roycroft

      • Roycroft

        sorry she/he

    • LB

      LOL. It’s funny cause it’s probably true…

    • Saudi Man

Do we really need to ask?

  • DarkHeart

sorry! a friend of mine (she’s a rabbit) was manning the brake/gas pedals and i (a wolf) was trying to steer.

    and we were hammered.

    • And Here…

And here I always thought that you were a coyote…..just goes to show.

  • Dezlboy

Texting on cellphone. Takes only one glance down at phone to lose your bearings, and then over correct, and crash. And, even when just talking on cellphone, you are distracted. I know I am. :-)

  • Ralph

    5th Street is very dangerous.

    They need to install bollards.

  • Mary-Austin

Reminds me of the Subaru Impreza driven by Ethan Tremblay in Due Date.

  • More FUD

I don’t get it. It looks like a normal parking job around here.

My second guess would be that they were trying to change their motor oil.

  • NoVapologist

I think it’s pretty clear from the picture that the accident was caused by stray blocks of wood and stone that got caught under the car’s tires.

  • MrsD

Take a closer look at the license plate, I think it is a veteran. So maybe cut the person some slack. Instead of driving and talking on a cell phone maybe it was someone trying to drive without a limb, maybe getting use to a prosthetic?

    • C Spackler

      1) A disabled person would also qualify for a permanent disabled plate. (which I’m not seeing)

      2) Even if disabled, a person must show that they can competently operate the motor vehicle in order to be licensed.

  • 5th Street Gang

Great speculation by many, but DUI is the cause.
