Here's a comparison of the existing layout and the new layout in the plan sketches:

http://www.facebook.com/photo.php?fbid=10151220620063689&set=a.245406463688.168382.37658178688&type=1&theater

Some of the dirt area on the west side of the entrance will be paved over and the newspaper boxes moved. The sidewalk on the SW corner will also be widened.

The article already indicates that construction will begin next week.

This project will remake the existing Metro entrance. But there are also longer-term plans for the Metro station that are more ambitious. I don't believe those future plans are funded yet, so it could be several years before those are started, if ever. One proposal is to add a 2nd entrance at the station, near the corner of 18th St. and Crystal Drive. This entrance would be more convenient for those heading to offices and restaurants on Crystal Drive.

Another proposal is to create a Metro plaza between the two Metro entrances, along 18th St. There could be restaurants along the plaza as well as open space for temporary events like the farmer's market and the various beer and wine events.

You can find more details on those proposals in the Crystal City Sector Plan. FYI: Those ideas are not guaranteed to happen. But as older buildings are torn down and replaced in the neighborhood (1400 Crystal Drive, 1900 Crystal Drive, 220 20th St.), some or many of the proposed improvements could be added.

I'd trade renovations on the outside for working escalators! It ridiculous at this station. The standing water whenever it rains is disgusting to say the least, and is a danger to riders. Fix the substantive things first.
