Streetcar Dominates Board Debate, Even in N. Arlington

The participants were the three candidates for Arlington County Board: incumbent Democrat Libby Garvey, Green Party candidate Audrey Clement and Republican Matt Wavro.

Despite the fact that the audience lives north of Route 50, in a neighborhood that has plenty of concerns about traffic, development, aircraft noise and other issues, the main topic of the debate was the Columbia Pike streetcar. The streetcar so dominated the first half of the debate that the moderator had to eventually ask the audience to refrain from asking about it.

Fire Station Open House to Include Fire, K-9 Demos

Located on the Arlington-Falls Church border at 555 N. Washington Street, the station’s open house will include a mock structure fire demonstration, an auto extraction demonstration and a K-9 demonstration.

Crime Report: Stolen iPhone Tracked Via GPS

The incident started when a resident of a house invited a woman inside for a drink early Sunday morning, according to Arlington County Police spokesman Dustin Sternbeck. After the woman left, one or more of the home’s residents noticed items missing, including an iPhone. The victim called police and used a GPS tracking feature to point police to the whereabouts of the stolen iPhone.

Police went to the address provided by the victim and found the stolen items, according to Sternbeck. The suspect confessed on the scene, he said.

I finally got a chance to get back to New York City last weekend after an eight year absence. Car Flips on Roof Near Patrick Henry Elementary

A car flipped on its roof after running into a parked car across from Patrick Henry Elementary School today.

The accident happened just past noon near the intersection of 7th Street S. and Garfield Street. A silver Mazda driven by a female driver apparently ran into the back of a car that was parked on the side of the street. The collision caused the Mazda to flip on its roof.

Armed Robbery at Pentagon City Nordstrom

The incident happened around 10:20 a.m. Initial reports suggest a man, armed with a gun, tried to rob the fine jewelry section of the department store, but didn’t end up taking any merchandise. He fled the store and was last seen running toward Pentagon Row. Police swarmed the area and stopped some possible suspects but so far have not made any arrests.

No one was injured during the incident.

Streets to Close in Va. Square, Clarendon for 8K Race

The race, organized by Potomac River Running, raises money for a number of good causes. Last year, sponsors say the race raised $125,000 for ten non-profits.

Colonial Invasion Comes to Ft. Myer — The annual spirit night for George Washington University basketball is coming to Ft. Myer’s Conmy Hall tonight. The event, which is usually held on the GW campus, will start at 8:00 p.m. It’s being held at Ft. Myer as a tribute to the military, and to celebrate GW’s basketball history — the team played at Conmy Hall from 1956 to 1975. GW students will be bused to the event from the school’s Foggy Bottom campus. [Colonial Hoops]

Late Night Shuttle Service Eyes Arlington — The DC Hopper, a nightlife shuttle service for bar-goers, is thinking about coming to Arlington. The service just launched in Bethesda, taking passengers from Bethesda to Georgetown to Dupont Circle and back in 30-passenger minibuses outfitted with TVs and free Red Bull energy drinks. Rides cost between $24 and $10. The owners say they would eventually like to expand the service to include Arlington, U Street NW, and H Street NE. [BethesdaNow]
