State transportation officials say that despite the effects from Superstorm Sandy, a total closure of Columbia Pike at Washington Boulevard is still planned for this coming weekend.

The Pike will be closed between S. Quinn Street and S. Orme Street from 9:00 p.m. on Friday, Nov. 2 to 4:30 a.m. on Monday, Nov. 5. The closure will be in place while crews demolish part of the Washington Boulevard bridge over the Pike as part of VDOT’s ongoing interchange project.

“Motorists on Columbia Pike will follow detour signs as will motorists heading from Washington Boulevard to Columbia Pike,” VDOT said in an email. “The closure is part of the bridge replacement project at Washington Boulevard (Route 27) and Columbia Pike. Visit the VDOT project page for more information.”

In related transportation .. any idea if the 10th St Ramp from 50WB will be closed for good? I looked at the VDOT site but it was not very clear.

According to the email I got from Arlington on the VDOT work, it is closed until Spring 2013:

“Beginning Monday, October 29, VDOT will close the westbound Arlington Boulevard exit onto 10th Street. Please follow the signed detour route from westbound Arlington Boulevard to N. Pershing Drive and Washington Boulevard to access 10th Street. This detour is scheduled to continue until Spring 2013.”

The County has a webpage about the project:

speaking as someone in teh know about this project, believe me when i say your going to want to avoid this area this weekend. its a necessarily closure but its not gong to work well so expect HIGH DELAYS if you plan on driving thru there.

Will drivers heading east on the Pike be able to get on 395 using the on-ramp from Quinn?

      • Josh S

According to the map reachable by following the links, yes.

      • Jason

yes, that movement will remain unaffected.

    Bye bye bridgecicles!

I kind of think they should auction off the bridgecicles. I’m going to miss them.

Stalagtites. They hold on TITE to the ceiling. – vs- Stalagmites– they are on the floor (of a cave, not Columbia Pike) and you MITE trip on them. Ah Mnemonics…..

        • you just made my day

          yeah, i know, i need a life.

“Motorists on Columbia Pike will follow detour signs as will motorists heading from Washington Boulevard to Columbia Pike {where a Honda CRV will flip over}” VDOT said in an email.

    • BrianKal

sorry, you mean DC taxi will flip

      • Sam the Cat

I nominate a random late modle luxury SUV to flip over for undetermined causes on colombia pike, causing a massive north/south bound backup on 395.
