The “they” that wanted to pay homage to Bob Peck was not the developer or architect, but sentimental folks who think anything more than 10 years old is somehow “historic”.

They made a stink about it, and the developer tacked it on (and yes, got a hell of a lot of height & bonus density one way or the other). I don’t mind it, but it doesn’t really fit the character of the building. I *do* like the marker shaped like the tail fin of an old Chevy that sits just N. of the building and has a little blurb about the old Peck dealership, and give the developer partial marks by replicating the diamond theme on the ‘parking’ sign.

There is no “had” to keep. This is where ArlCo “works” with developers–you give us those Peck triangles and a couple of mil, and we’ll let you go up a floor or two above current zoning.

They wanted to pay homage to the Bob Peck dealership’s architecture (by incorporating the diamond crown into the building), which was part of the ’50s and ’60s Googie architecture movement. (Dulles Airport and LAX are as well). http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Googie_architecture

Could not agree more. While the “nod”, as you call it, was an attempt to translate the Peck eyebrow it is out of proportion to the building and overpowers the contemporary design of the building. If I had to guess, believe the county planning staff had something to do with the addition.

I believe you’re correct – they HAD to keep the idea of the old Bob Peck front. I think that’s why it looks like it ended up looking tacked on to the building.

I like it– others might think it looks like a a frilly petticoat. I miss Bob Peck’s- and now that Rosenthal is gone there is no Chevy dealership in the local area.
