Yes, car traffic will be worse than if Bob Peck Chevrolet was still there - but overall, if the site is going to be redeveloped anyway, let's at least do all we can to make it a green building and discourage its occupants from commuting solo in cars.

Dude, nobody said it was going to make driving easier. Traffic was going to get bad either way. Now, as you know firsthand, you at least have a chance to avoid it by walking. If Ballston didn't exist, you'd have to work in Ashburn or something, and you'd drive an hour each day anyway, with no chance to walk.

So yeah, it's working out great.

Actually, I live and work in Ballston, so I walk to work. When I do have to drive in the area, I've noticed the incredible increase in stop-and-go traffic in the Ballston area, due to the dense development and very high number of cars. I'm just pointing out that despite having Metro, bikes, etc., it hasn't become the predicted panacea that argues for dense and unchecked development. All of these "green" initiatives have been completely negated by the traffic gridlock as a result of development. I believe smarter development would be better than token "green" buildings and self-congratulatory awards.

Yes, I'd bet there is [presuming there is a meta-point-gatherer]. I'm not claiming that there isn't merit to LEED certification or to other measures that facilitate mass transit or that otherwise reduce the need for carbon emissions. I just wanted to point out that there is additional food for thought related to Cynic's anecdotal post. It was an interesting and thoughtful discussion on NPR and it considered Cynic's point directly.

The part that struck home with me is the fact that people who walk to work or walk a significant portion of their commute lose on average of 5lbs/yr. I'll cop to driving when I can walk ... and to needing to lose 5lbs.
