Yorktown High School logoThe Capitals’ season may be in shambles due to the ongoing NHL lockout, but all is not lost for fans wishing to take in some hockey. The Yorktown High School hockey team is playing a home game at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex (627 N. Glebe Road) in Ballston on Friday.

The Yorktown Ice Hockey Club has been in existence since 2003. The team has not been granted sports team status at the school, but is instead considered an “interest club.” It’s part of the Northern Virginia Scholastic Hockey League, which is the premier high school level league in Northern Virginia, and was bumped up from junior varsity to varsity this year.

One of the coaches boasted to ARLnow.com about having the league’s leading goal scorer on his team. Cameron Smith has scored 17 goals in three games, including a record-setting 11 in one game. So far this year, the team is 2-2.

Friday’s game against Broad Run High School begins at 6:40 p.m. at the Kettler Capitals Iceplex in the Ballston Mall. It’s free to attend.

After this Friday, there will be two more Yorktown home games at Kettler. The team will play Osbourne Park at 6:40 p.m. on Friday, January 4, and Madison on Friday, February 8.

One of Yorktown’s coaches looks like a caveman.

  • Corey

Unbelievable that the county is wasting our money on this.

    • Captain_Obvious

How do you know they didn’t pay for the ice time themselves ?

      • YHS Hockey Parent

As the article says, the YHS Ice Hockey Club is not a school team, it is a club. Participants pay ALL costs themselves, including ice time.

        • Captain_Obvious

          I assume you meant to respond to C o r e y ?

    • JB

Yeah its crazy that the county wastes all that money on children, promoting safe havens, building teamwork, exercise, and other positive values.

    • Rob

Please leave Corey. We don’t want you in Arlington.

  • Christophe

Yeah youth sports really are a waste of money. Much better off funneling these resources into the prison system to make room for these kids when they take up other extracurricular activities like a healthy drug habit, theft, etc.

  • bemused bystander

Wow, the churls are really out in force today!

  • Rick

11 goals in one game — either he is that good or the other teams just suck

    • cj

He’s good. One of the top prospects nationwide in his age group.

  • YHS Parent

Wait a second, isn’t the Kettler complex in the Washington and Lee school zone? Jeez YT -you already copied our pool, so I think its better that you find a rink in your own zone.

    • John

All three county high schools have ice hockey clubs and Kettler is the home rink.

      • yhs junior

not true, Wakefield does not have a team

    • Yorktown hockey player

there arent any rinks in the YHS zone…
kettler is the only hockey rink within 10 miles of arlington

    • rob

      …. ha ha…

  • HockeyMom

O’Connell, Yorktown and Washington-Lee all have hockey clubs (paid for entirely by team dues – no county money here). In addition, there is an Arlington Middle School Hockey Team – all students who go to an Arlington public or private school are eligible to tryout/join. Come out and support this great group of kids – O’Connell has been a past State Championship team and all three schools have seen a big increase in interest. It is amazing what you can do WITHOUT taxpayer dollars!

  • Stephen

yea i play on the team. we pay for everything ourselves to you pretentious people that act so rudely to something you have no knowledge on.

    • Captain_Obvious

It was just C o r e y that said that. Good luck in your game and have fun.

  • Stephen

    thanks!
