New Indian Restaurant in Lyon Park

by ARLnow.com — January 25, 2013 at 6:00 pm 2,108 28 Comments

A new Indian restaurant recently opened in the Lyon Park neighborhood.

Masala Express, at 2622-A Pershing Drive, just celebrated its first month in business. The restaurant, which offers carry out service and a small section of cafe seating, has enjoyed favorable reviews on Yelp since it opened on Christmas Day (Dec. 25).

The restaurant is owned by Vinita Chawla, a veteran of the hotel industry. Also helping out is her husband, Naresh, who has run a catering business focusing on Indian cuisine for the past 20 years. Both Vinita and Naresh are natives of India.

One restaurant patron told ARLnow.com that Masala Express offers Indian cuisine that’s spicier and “more authentic” than several of the other Indian restaurants in the Clarendon and Courthouse areas.

Masala Express opened in what used to be a portion of Gala Futons and Furniture. The furniture store remains open, albeit with a smaller storefront.

The restaurant is open from 11:00 a.m. to 9:00 p.m. Monday through Saturday, and from 11:00 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. on Sunday.

Thank god! Arlington has a real dearth of Indian restaurants. Sangam went away, and then Bombay Curry Co. in N. Alexandria went away, and I’d thought all we had left was Delhi Dhaba–which is OK but not much for a sit-down meal.

Good luck to the Chawla family. I will give this place a try.

    • Just me

I will give it a try. I love Tandoori Nights.

Check out Saran on Lee Hwy. Vegetarian and really good.

Saran–No chicken tikka masala or butter chicken? Or chicken vindaloo? Or lamb rogan josh (Lamb Josh Groban)? I’ll take a pass.

Saran will make you forgot about the Butter McChick, just try their Mutter dish!

Love Saran. Great food and great prices. A lot of the local Indian places in VA buy their Samosas from Saran.

    • Clarendoniac

Delhi Club in Clarendon has fantastic Indian food.

  • Hungry

I really, really hope they think about adding delivery. I would be so happy if I could get Indian food for delivery in N. Arlington (that’s not Delhi Dhaba).

I’ve eaten there and it’s good with pretty reasonable prices. I had the vegetable pekoras in the first food picture. They are along the lines of falafel.

I visited their website which seems to still be under construction. All I see is some fat Italian guy with a plate of pasta.

      • Luigi

Marone! I think a-that was a-me! But the lasagna has a-curry in it. Mama mia!

      • FrenchyB

Ey, why you make a da fun of Luigi?

  • Wino

Would love to order..Menu is not online. Or links go to construction page…

Just tried it this week. Great food, very reasonable prices, nice owners. Supposed to have a web site up in a week or two with menu items, etc. Will be very happy to continue to patronize their business. So nice to have another non-pretentious excellent restaurant in the neighborhood.

Sweet website. I particularly like the caricature of a cook in an Italian restaurant telling you that the site is “under construction” when you click on literally anything.

    • luigi

      Hey, we still a-building!

  • pdarl

Hurray! I moved to S. Arlington two years ago from Herndon. Herndon has really great Indian restaurants and I have been in withdrawal. MUST GO NOW!! Hope they have dosas….

You should try Aroma in Shirlington – fantastic food and great buffet on Sundays. Great service and atmosphere. Oh – and yes, Shirlington is in SOUTH Arlington.

  • Zach

This is excited. As other’s have said, Arlington desperately needs more Indian options. I quite like Tandoori Nights/Zaika but more is always good. Delhi Club is consistent and has a nice staff, but the food is mediocre. Minerva Express is a hassle to do business with and the food is very inconsistent – sometimes delicious, sometimes very questionable. Personally I think Delhi Dhaba is pretty bad. I think their dishes would be decent if freshly prepared but I always get lukewarm food that’s a little gross.

  • David M

What about Aroma in Shirlington? I love that place. Always great food & service.

    • Carmen

      I love Aroma.

  • Peacemagnet

I had a sampling of all their vegetarian entrees plus a samosa and enjoyed every bite. Will definitely return and recommend. Easy parking, clean, quick and friendly service.

    • Claudia

Went for lunch today — spicy pumpkin, spinach, chicken, good bread. Very nice restaurant and family.

  • Neighbor

We ate there again tonight. We got four dishes, each one was AMAZING! The dishes were all differently flavored, all delicious. A small operation, run by sweet people who live just a few blocks away. Make sure to try them out, you won’t be disappointed!

  • novasteve

Can’t wait to try it. I wish they would open a dive bar in that shopping center.

This will be a great addition to that part of Clarendon. That whole area of east Clarendon, which is right now full of small dry cleaners, check cashing, take out places, is really ripe for retail redevelopment. The only thing around there now is Talullah’s – everything else is not noteworthy at all. This will be a great addition.

Here’s a scan of their menu:
    I highly recommend… everything I’ve tried.
