May I kindly suggest you tone down the background image a little bit? Just reduce the contrast by 30% or so — less intrusive that way.

    • speonjosh

You get used to it. I didn’t like it at first but don’t notice it anymore.

This is a great looking comment system!

  • Cletus Van Damme

Va Tech fan makes changes to ArlNow website…

  • Arlington Notable

    This is off-putting.

  • Ashton Heights Represent

I can’t wait to downvote Drax and NovaSteve!

    • drax

      Yeah, that makes sense.

    • novasteve

      Here’s your chance.

  • Arlington Chris

Very cool to see a new commenting system. I enjoy reading the comments on ArlNow, but a voting system is a welcome addition.

  • ArlingtonWay

    Looks promising.

  • Marie Antoinette

Can we now upload user posts to Facebook? Goodness I hope not.

  • Possible problem?

Hmmm. I’m logged in as it has my username and “Logout” at the top right above the banner, but in comments it won’t let me post and says I need to log in. Will the comments use a separate login, or is this just a temporary thing while it’s still getting configured?

    • http://www.arlnow.com/ ARLnow.com

Right, for now the site login is for the forums only. We hope to integrate that back into one sign in soon.

      • ED2WIN

Hope this is done soon! My existing disqus account and my ArlNow account are fighting with each other. I’m not sure which one is winning.

      • speonjosh

And you have to log in to each individual thread to up/down vote? Lame.

  • Hugh Jass

    Meh.

  • meh…

I’ve been trying to reset my password for months now. The link that I receive via email is simply a link back to the sight, and not a link to reset my password.

    • ACDC Hack

Did you sacrifice a chicken at midnight ??

I bet that is your problem !!

  • Max

I was kinda hoping the new comments would require facebook login. Not great, but there’s less anonymity which may stop some of the flaming that goes on.

    • drax

So why didn’t you post your full name, Max?

      • ACDC Hack

He was reserving his internet given right to flame someone in the future…..

  • Thes

    This is promising…

  • Hee-Haw

    cool

    Update:

We’re continuing to experience problems updating comments from February articles. As a result, you will not see comments from the past three weeks. Also, while guests can post on new articles, we’re seeing issues with guest comments on older articles. Those who are logged in through Disqus should not have any trouble posting comments, however.

    • speonjosh

Don’t like that the order of comments has flipped. Will this be customizable at some point?

      • http://www.arlnow.com/ ARLnow.com

No, this is how it will stay — with upvoted comments appearing first and newer/lower-rated comments at the bottom.

        • Josh S

          What?!?

Completely user unfriendly. By keeping to a strictly time-based thread, at least you can follow a conversation. With upvoted comments moving to the top, regardless of when they were posted, it’s just a popularity contest for whoever can come up with the wittiest line. Honest back and forth discussion is minimized for the sake of one-liners, hyperbole, and pandering.

Make no mistake, the value of ARLNow is the comment thread. The items are interesting, but it’s the (virtual) discussion with others that makes it worthwhile to spend any time on the site.

  • chicken chef

I’m sure there were comments in this pot before I left my apartment this morning!

  • bender

it remains to be seen if it is an improvement
    most disqus applications are crap

  • bender

    like i said – crap
of course my prior comment disappeared right away

  • G Clifford Prout

    Another thing to learn

  • jane

strange set-up. today is first time I can see any comments. The inability to vote is odd. Random placement of comments is even stranger. Well, at least the paid-bloggers will keep posting.

  • YorktownStudent

I hate this new commenting system. ARLnow is just like Facebook, changing things that don’t need to be changed.
