Why would I not be concerned about the Public Safety and Crime Rate of my neighborhood? Why would you even presume to tell me what I-am-and-am-not concerned about?
No, what you're TRULY concerned about is your property's value decline. You're just acting all concerned by scapegoating the subject (sex offenders! safety concerns!). Why don't say what you're really pissed about, ok? Quit whining and move somewhere else where homeless people don't exist (where? no idea.). You're the kind of person that makes me HATE living in Arlington - among such uppity yet ignorant-minded nimby 'holes as portrayed. 'Nuff said

Let's say (solely for argument's sake, I make no representation as to whether these costs actually exist) that proximity of one's home to a shelter decreases property value by $X, and imposes a safety risk of $Y. Sure, you feel bad when you drive by panhandlers, but your kid's classroom is an overcrowded trailer, so you'd prefer that the county allocate less than $Z (from your share of taxes) to address homelessness.

Well, if you care about the homeless at all, then you must support the Board's plan, without reservation, at the cost to you of $(X+Y+Z). Even though everyone else in the county only has to spend $Z, you're a phony and a hypocrite if you complain. After all, somebody's gotta pay for it, and you DID say that you were "progressive."

Wait, you say that your views on some issues are more progressive* than on others? Nope, sorry - that's phony and hypocrite talk. Go ahead and visit ARLnow to receive your phony/hypocrite badge of shame from anonymous internet users, none of which would ever even think to place a modicum of self-interest above the greater good*.

*as determined by the Board

It's pretty clear that he's trolling, since he characterized as "spewing outraged ramblings" a call for evaluating people on an individual basis.

For what it's worth, I agree that Paul's thinking seems to typify the "all or nothing" party platform support that dominates American political debate. Apparently, if you are "progressive" on one particular issue in Arlington, then you must also side with the County Board in every other issue, and agree with the manner in which they act, even if against your rational self-interest.

Oh dear, homeless people are eating pizza tonight?! Those one percenters spending $2.50 on a slice! Next they'll be eating a $3 street vendor hot dog. This wasteful spending has got to stop!
