Let’s say (solely for argument’s sake, I make no representation as to whether these costs actually exist) that proximity of one’s home to a shelter decreases property value by $X, and imposes a safety risk of $Y. Sure, you feel bad when you drive by panhandlers, but your kid’s classroom is an overcrowded trailer, so you’d prefer that the county allocate less than $Z (from your share of taxes) to address homelessness.

Well, if you care about the homeless at all, then you must support the Board’s plan, without reservation, at the cost to you of $(X+Y+Z). Even though everyone else in the county only has to spend $Z, you’re a phony and a hypocrite if you complain. After all, somebody’s gotta pay for it, and you DID say that you were “progressive.”

For what it’s worth, I agree that Paul’s thinking seems to typify the “all or nothing” party platform support that dominates American political debate. Apparently, if you are “progressive” on one particular issue in Arlington, then you must also side with the County Board in every other issue, and agree with the manner in which they act, even if against your rational self-interest.
