Crime Report: Diamonds Snatched

On the eve of the Fourth of July, police say a man snatched a ring and a number of loose diamonds from a clerk at the Helzberg Diamonds store in Pentagon City Mall.

From this week’s Arlington County crime report:

ROBBERY, 07/03/13, 1400 block of S. Hayes St. At 7:45 pm on July 3 an unknown suspect grabbed a ring and loose diamonds from a clerk at the Helzberg Diamonds store. Suspect is described as a black male, 5’8, 170 lbs. wearing a long sleeved blue shirt and khaki pants.

BURGLARY, 07/03/13, 2600 block of S. Veitch St. Between 7:30 pm on July 3 and 12:57 am on July 4, an unknown subject broke into the victim’s home and stole jewelry, electronics and a camera. No suspect information.

ROBBERY, 07/04/13, 2500 block of N. 9 St. At 1:30 pm on July 4, unknown suspect stole merchandise from the Giant grocery store and threatened the clerk who confronted him. Suspect is described as a black male, wearing gray pants, blue shirt and a black hat with a feather in it.

SUSPICIOUS VEHICLE, 07/04/13, 1400 block of N. Courthouse Rd. At 2:29 pm on July 4, a suspicious vehicle was spotted in the Courthouse parking lot with occupants behaving in a suspicious manner. Vehicle was searched and cleared by police and fire departments.

ATTEMPTED MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 07/04/13, 700 block of S. Ode St.  At 9:15 pm on July 4, a suspect pointed a weapon at two individuals and threatened to shoot them. Arrested was Andris Veip, 29, of Arlington.

FELONY CHILD NEGLECT, 07/05/13, 200 block of N. Glebe Rd. At 5:43 pm on July 5, subject realized her infant child had been left in the locked car all day. Infant was pronounced dead at Alexandria Hospital.  Zoraida Conde-Hernandez, 32, of Alexandria was arrested and held without bond.

MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 07/05/13, 4200 block of S. Campbell Ave. Between 1:00 am and 2:22 am on July 5, a group of unknown subjects assaulted the victims at a holiday party.  Suspects are described as Middle Eastern males.

TAMPERING (Series) 07/06/13 5600 block of S. 7 Rd. During the overnight hours of July 6, multiple unlocked vehicles were entered and items taken.  No suspect description.

BURGLARY, 07/08/13, 3100 block of N. Pollard St. Between 5:00 pm on July 7 and 10:11 am on July 8 an unknown subject entered the victim’s home and stole jewelry. No suspect information.

ATTEMPTED BREAKING AND ENTERING, 07/09/13, 4300 block of N. 4 St.  At 4:24 am on July 9, an unknown subject attempted to enter the victim’s home through the bedroom window. Suspect is described as a Hispanic male, wearing a black shirt, and a red hat with an unknown emblem.

The STEAM Workforce Development Teacher Fellowship provides Arlington Public Schools (APS) high school, middle school, and elementary school teachers with opportunities to learn about workplace needs in STEAM-related fields and for them to use the experience to enhance student learning to match workplace expectations in a selected industry. STEAM Fellows participate in a three-week summer fellowship, receiving a $4,000 stipend upon completion.

Applicants planning to pursue a fellowship in the arts must demonstrate how they will build connections between the arts and science, technology, engineering, or mathematics.
