Crime Report: Man Crashes into Boulders, Assaults Cops

An 18-year-old Arlington resident was arrested early Tuesday morning after police say he drunkenly ran his car into two small “boulders” at Henry Clay Park, then assaulted two police officers as he was being taken him into custody.

The man faces a long list of charges, including DUI, possession of PCP and assault on a police officer. From this week’s Arlington County crime report:

ASSAULT ON POLICE OFFICER, 140422003, 500 block of Garfield Street. On April 22 at 1:29am, police noticed a vehicle driving erratically and honking its horn. Police followed the vehicle and witnessed it strike two boulders at Henry Clay Park and coming to a stop. The suspect assaulted officers as they took him into custody. John Taylor Herrling, 18, of Arlington, VA was arrested for two counts of assault on a police officer, possession of PCP, DUI, eluding, resisting arrest, obstruction of justice, and hit and run. His bond status will be determined once he is sober. 

Also in this week’s crime report, a man is accused of trying to rape a woman he met on an online dating site.

ATTEMPTED RAPE, 140420017, 1700 block of N. Troy Street. On April 20 at 6:50am, a victim reported being sexually assaulted by a subject she met through an online dating site. Following police investigation, Joseph Lamae Coles, 24, of Washington, D.C. was charged with attempted rape, abduction with the intent to defile, choking, and malicious wounding. He was held without bond.

ARMED ROBBERY, 140420034, 6000 block of N. Wilson Boulevard. On April 20 at 6:16pm, a victim reported that he was held at gunpoint and robbed of his wallet and cell phone in Upton Hill Park. Suspect one is described as a Hispanic male with a light complexion, tall in height, and approximately 18 to 20 years old. Suspect two is described as Hispanic male with a light complexion, shorter than suspect one, and approximately 18 to 20 years old.

ROBBERY, 140417025, 3000 block of S. Abingdon Street. Between 2 an 2:20 am on April 17, an unknown subject assaulted a 62 year-old victim and attempted to rob him. The victim was able to fight off the lone suspect and reported no stolen items. The victim suffered minor injuries and could not provide a suspect description.

ROBBERY, 140419067, 3800 block of N. 5th Street. On April 19 at 10:47pm, an unknown subject refused to pay for his taxi fare and assaulted the driver when confronted. The taxi driver sustained numerous minor injuries and had his glasses stolen while he was on the ground. The suspect is described as a black male, approximately 6’2″, 250 pounds and in his thirties. At the time of the incident he was wearing a black jacket and had a black bookbag.

ROBBERY, 140420002, 600 block of S. 21st Street. On April 19 at 11:59pm, police responded to a report of robbery and found the victim laying in the middle of the road. He had no injuries but stated that has he was assaulted by two men that had gotten out of a white truck. One of the suspects allegedly took out a knife and held it to the victim’s throat while the suspects went through the victim’s pockets. The victim’s cell phone and wallet were reported stolen. Both suspects were wearing masks and gloves at the time of the incident. There is no further suspect information.

ASSAULT ON POLICE OFFICER, 140422055, 3000 block of S. Columbia Pike. On April 22 at 5:13pm, a subject was asked repeatedly to leave a restaurant. He refused and became extremely combative and assaulted police. Alfred Brown, 51, of no fixed address was arrested for assault on police. He was held without bond.

MALICIOUS BODILY INJURY TO A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, 140419011, 1100 block of N. Highland Street. On April 19 at approximately 1:59am, officers witnessed a SUV stop in front of Mr. Days bar and forcefully throw a water bottle out of the vehicle at other patrons. The vehicle took off at a high rate of speed, struck a median and was driving recklessly before stopping at a traffic light. Foot patrol officers attempted to get the driver out of the vehicle when he accelerated forward and knocked an officer to the ground. The officer sustained minor injuries. Evan James Rowland, 27, of Alexandria, VA was arrested at his home several hours later and charged with malicious bodily injury to a law enforcement officer. He was held without bail.

ATTEMPTED MALICIOUS WOUNDING ON A LAW ENFORCEMENT OFFICER, 140419065, 5900 block of S. Columbia Pike. On April 19 at 10:35pm, an armed robbery suspect was observed driving at a high rate of speed attempting to elude Fairfax Police. The driver of the vehicle along with multiple passengers eluded Fairfax and Arlington officers down Columbia Pike and hit a car. The suspect was later apprehended in D.C. The charges obtained in Arlington were for two counts of attempted malicious wounding on law enforcement, felony eluding, felony hit and run, six counts of child endangerment, and reckless driving. The driver later identified as Marcus Stephon Woodland, 28, of Washington, D.C. will be held in Washington, D.C. pending extradition back to Arlington.

ATTEMPTED MALICIOUS WOUNDING, 140418064, 1300 block of S. George Mason Drive. On April 18 at 8:55pm, a victim reported that a suspect pulled a machete on him in Doctor’s Run Park after the victim confronted him following a dog bite by the subject’s Chihuahua. The subject fled the scene in an unknown vehicle and is described as a Hispanic male, 5’5″, with black hair and brown eyes, and approximately 150 pounds and 40 years old.

ASSAULT BY MOB, 14042009, 2900 block of N. Wilson Boulevard. On April 20 at 2:20am, two victims were assaulted by a group of Hispanic males outside of Mexicali Blues. One of the victim’s was transported to the hospital with minor injuries. There was very little suspect information provided to police.

CHILD ENDANGERMENT, 140419012, 1700 block of N. Moore Street. On April 19 at 12:18am, police responded to a report of a highly intoxicated male sitting at the entrance of a parking garage with a small child playing near the street. The 7 year-old child was placed in the custody of relatives. Oscar E. Garcia, 37, of Arlington, VA was arrested for appearing drunk in public and child endangerment. Mr. Garcia, at the time, was unable to appear for bond in front of the magistrate due to his level of intoxication.

BURGLARY, 140418019, 2300 block of N. Clarendon Boulevard. Between 4:48 pm on April 17 and 8:40 am on April 18, an unknown subject(s) entered an office and stole a laptop and projector. There were no signs of forced entry. There is no suspect(s) description.

BURGLARY, 140416010, 1600 block of N. 21st Street. On April 16 at 8:15am, a victim reported that his storage area in the basement of his address was broken into. The front screen had been cut and three bicycle tires taken. No other storage areas were broken into or missing anything. There are no suspects at this time.

BURGLARY, 140422065, 5500 block of S. Columbia Pike. Between 10 am and 5:30 pm on April 21, an unknown subject entered an apartment and stole an iPad. The suspect allegedly used a side door to gain entry. There is no suspect description.
