Does anyone have a recommendation for a good veterinarian in the area? I'm also hoping for one with reasonable prices. Thanks in advance.

Cherrydale comes highly recommended for a good reason – they are very good but expensive.

We have had very good experiences with Banfield at the Petsmart at 7 Corners in Falls Church. Drs. Castro and Withers have seen our dogs for the past 8 years and did both of their spaying. They are reasonably priced, can usually fit you in same-day and provide excellent service. Just keep in mind as with all vets emergencies get priority so you may have to wait a bit of an emergency comes in.

For emergency needs I recommend Columbia Pike Animal Hospital. While not in Arlington nor particularly close (it's in Annandale) their doctors and staff are excellent.

I agree with courthound; Cherrydale is expensive but highly recommended and very thorough. Cherrydale does really good follow through and will send you cards well in advance reminding you of your animals' next scheduled visit, whether or not you'd already scheduled one.

I agree with Petsmart, I use them because of the convenience but they are also good.

I take my cat to Arlington Animal Hospital on Columbia Pike.  I've met with both Dr. Jones' there, and they are absolutely wonderful.  I've been able to get appointments quickly (same-day or next-day), and they've taken time to answer all my questions (which, being a new cat owner, there have been many) and even helped me out over the phone when I've had some concerns but not been in the area to actually take my cat in.

I honestly can't speak to the prices, mainly because a) I don't remember, and b) I'm not sure what constitutes "reasonable," as I've not needed veterinary services until only a few months ago.

I use Ballston Animal Hospital for my two dogs and love them.  They have reasonable prices and really great docs.

I take my cat to Capitol Cat Clinic. Never had any problems. Not sure how the prices compare, but I don't consider them unreasonable. If you can afford to live in that area it shouldn't be an issue.

I second the recommendation for Ballston Animal Hospital.  It's on Wilson Blvd., just north of George Mason.  We take our dog there, both for regular vet check-ups and for nail clipping (I can't get him to let me clip his nails).

Third Ballston, and recommend Doctor Collins. He's very realistic and recommends watching things rather than jumping to unnecessary invasive procedures. One of my cats has a speck of a cataract. He's getting a little up there, but it doesn't obstruct his vision and he doesn't require surgery at this time. Great! Another vet would have had me in complete panic. They're cheaper for this area but more expensive then outside of NOVA. Most important of all the dog and cats trust him.

I like Cherrydale, the staff is great and you can get appt. on a very short notice.  I have also noticed that the arlington police uses them as well, I have seen a police car in the lot on a few different times I've passed

I third capital cat clinic.  Easy to get to, comfy atmosphere, and the vets are really good with my 2 cats.  I found my cats were much calmer at the vets when there weren't any dogs/birds/rodents around.  The doctors there also don't push treatment options, but give you the info and offer to leave the room so you can think it over to call back to schedule a follow up.

Not cheap though, but I found vet care out here rather pricey wherever you go, and they seemed to fall right in the middle cost wise.  I think I pay ~$70-$80 per cat each visit, plus the cost of vaccines/etc.

Has anyone weighed the pros and cons of pet insurance? I have ACPA insurance, but I've heard some bad things, as well as it not being really a financially wise decision, though money is not really an issue for me,but for other less well off people, is it a good or bad idea? My parents said they would disown me  unless I got it, so I got it. But I have barely utilized it, and it's about $50-70 a month for several cats. I guess I'm fortunate to have healthy cats.

When we adopted a two-year-old dog last year, I bought pet insurance for him.  It's about $25/month, from PetPlan.  It covers a lot, which was important to me.  The last dogs we had cost thousands out of pocket at the end of their lives, so to me it's worth it.  It was more of a peace of mind decision for me than a purely financial one, however.

Capital Cat Clinic is amazing.  I have a very skittish cat who feels completely at home there.  They are thorough, kind and very knowledgable.

Dr. Julia Carter is excellent. She is located in Old Town Alexandria for office time, but will do house calls for certain things.  Her number is 571-235-4890.

Arlington Animal Hospital is great, they aren't overpriced either.

Petsmart is overpriced and I dont advise you go there mainly cause I took my dog to them 3 times for a "medicine we're sure about will help this problem."…. 3 times, they were "Sure". over 500 bucks worth of "Sure".

One 70 dollar trip to to Arlington Animal Hospital and my dog got better with medicine they gave.
