Arlington Girl Scouts Just Wanna Dance for Animals

March 30, 2015

Arlington-based Girl Scouts, representing Troops 5216 and 6100, announced that they are organizing the first of its kind dance party – the PAWS Ball – in an effort to raise awareness about the importance of the Animal Welfare League of Arlington (AWLA) that helps over 3,000 stray, hurt and lost animals each year.

The Girl Scouts, who attend 5th grade in Arlington County at K.W. Barrett Elementary and Long Branch Elementary Schools, have come together to organize the PAWS Ball as a way to promote AWLA’s services to help all animals in our community. After touring the AWLA headquarters at 2650 South Arlington Mill Drive, the girls learned that AWLA is not only helping to rescue domestic animals but they are also keeping our community safe by saving injured wildlife, quarantining sick animals, helping the police with animal related issues and investigating public health concerns.

Audrey Vizard, Girl Scout Junior from Troop 6100, commented “by organizing a big dance party – the PAWS Ball – we knew that we could bring together lots of people who want to dance and help animals at the same time. Also at the dance we are planning to have fun activities that help people learn about the phenomenal work that AWLA is doing with only a little money and staff members. We plan to use the money we raise from dancing to help pay for the pet adoption costs at AWLA. This way a family would have an easier time bringing home their furever pet!”

The Troops committed to organizing the PAWS Ball as part of their Bronze Award Project, which involves a minimum of 20 hours of time for each girl to build the team, explore their community, choose the project, plan the activity, put the plan into motion, and spread the word about your project. Once the project has been completed the 32 Girl Scouts will have dedicated over 640 hours to helping the animals of Northern Virginia.

The Girl Scouts’ PAWS Ball will be held on Saturday, April 25, 2015 from 6 to 8:30pm at the National Rural Electric Cooperative Association (NRECA) Conference Center, 4301 Wilson Blvd., Arlington, VA 22203. Tickets are $20 per couple (adult escort required) and registration is open to Girl Scouts and their families. Tickets are available for purchase prior to the event and donations are encouraged.
