Anyone else annoyed by increasingly obnoxious motorcycle noise?
  • hbar July 29, 2013 - 6:09 pm #81787 Reply

I live and work in the Ballston area, and I’ve noticed over the past year or so an increasingly obnoxious level of motorcycle noise in the surrounding areas. Some of these super-loud motorcycles can be heard for blocks (no exaggeration), and it seems like the cyclists go out of their way to operate these motorcycles in the loudest possible manner. This occurs at random intervals during the day, but also late at night. I suspect that one of the employees at either A-Town or Carpool has one of these obnoxiously loud motorcycles, as I hear their incredibly loud noise several nights a week, right after the 2:00 AM closing time. Why do the operators get off on annoying other people? It gives the other motorcycle operators a bad name, even when they’re not to blame (like all of us blaming bicyclists for the few bad apples). Would these people who operate the obnoxiously loud motorcycles like for me to pull up outside their homes at 2:00 AM and rev my car engine as loudly as possible? I realize there are noise ordinances in Arlington, and these motorcycles probably violate them, but I suspect there’s little to no chance for any enforcement action.

@hbar,  you may need to check the noise ordinance to see if there are specific limits to motorcycles. Most of the ordinance refers to a violation as noise above “what a reasonable person” would consider okay.  The lack of measurable specifications (as decibels) limits enforcement. However, if the police are notified to observe, they can take action and can fine.

Here is an FAQ about the ordinance  to include contact info

Here is a press release about the process of revising the code

    Here is the ordinance   http://www.arlingtonva.us/departments/CountyBoard/CountyCode/file74513.pdf

I do not have current information as to the revisions, but if anyone wants to influence the new code, there are ways to do so.

UPDATE: Maybe the new regulations are in effect?  See http://www.arlnow.com/2012/10/19/hefty-new-fines-proposed-for-noise-ordinance/

I live in Penrose and we have at least one or two in our neighborhood that I hear all the time, and it drives me absolutely nuts.  It’s just so blatantly obnoxious and completely unnecessary when you live in a city.  If you’re out in the country, sure, go ahead, do whatever the heck you want.  But it’s just not really fair to everyone else around you to behave that way.

If you can pinpoint the source and/or the general time of day, I strongly encourage you to try and get the police to monitor and hopefully catch him in the act.

There’s some a-hole who does this in Courthouse (in the area of 14th and Veitch) almost every weeknight at around 11pm. I figure he must get off of his restaurant job around then. It really is the height of narcissism to piss off literally thousands of people in an attempt to make yourself seem cool but actually coming across as a complete d-bag instead.
