how do i fix this problem? i always like being able to scroll down and easily see comments that are mine so i can post witty replies to their witty replies to my original witty reply.
Same here. I think its just one of the many cons of the new redesign.

THe only reason mine shows up in the article comment threads is because I use gravatar. You register there with your email address and avatar image, and then any time you log into one of several websites (including all WordPress blogs, like this one) using your email address, your avatar automatically shows up. Someone else had posted a link to gravatar the last time this problem got brought up and I checked it out. Seems cool. There’s no cost and since you put in virtually no private information, I’m not seeing any downside.
Other than that, I don’t know what the solution is.

This is a known issue. We’re working on a solution to have both the forum and comments use the same avatar, whether it’s a Gravatar or a user-uploaded avatar. The exact methodology hasn’t been chosen yet, but we’re open to suggestions as to whether users prefer to use a Gravatar or an uploaded image unique to the site.

Pretty much this. Gravatar isn’t about making it convenient to use the same avatar across multiple sites, it’s about tracking which sites and topics you read and post on.
