I feel like everyone needs a holiday after this, but Arlington emergency management disagrees. Your thoughts?

Slippery slope on this one…some valid points in there, yet hopefully crowds will be thinner, no storms and everyone is on their best behavior (and hydrated).  Canceling seems a bit much, IMHO.

“I’m questioning having a special event during an emergency”?

He's not the only one. Of course, before he starts questioning the 4th of July, maybe he needs to question last Saturday. The parade along Four Mile Run Drive, with a significant ACPD presence was not canceled. The parade was held at the height of outages. By tomorrow, there may still be some without power; but, most, if not all traffic lights will be working and streets cleared.

If it's about diverting government resources from the emergency, I can understand canceling. But if it's just PR, don't! What are people without power going to do, sit at home? They're going to go outside anyway. Especially people with kids. Their kids are bored. Give them something to do outside. They don't need the added disappointment of having a holiday event canceled. Put some mist-makers up and turn it into a giant cooling station or something.

Canceling events on the 4th would basically be letting the terrorist derecho win.

    Well said.

But of course had this been May Day they would insist the show must go own, like the commies in Montgomery County that cancelled 4th of July.

Worst of the outages are behind us (although as of last night I still don’t have power) let the show go on! But this has been a good test for what would happen during a major terrorist attack or natural disaster in the future. Crazy thing about this storm is there was no warning so you had to start the next day with whatever gas you had in the car, food in the pantry, batteries and candles available, cash on hand. Next time I hope to be prepared, although I was lucky I had a half tank of gas to head out of town

It shows how woefully unprepared we are really for anything. this was a thunderstorm that caused more havoc than a “hurricane”. There was warning of it, just not as much, but when it gets this hot, severe storms can happen at any moment, meteorologists know this, and people in the government and the power companies know or should know, otherwise they are woefully incompetent.

Remember last year the problems the earthquake caused despite being a minor one? Remmber the traffic? Nothing can be handled here, any terrorist attach will be catastophic if they attack civilians and not a specific symbolic target.

what i said was it was in the MIDDLE of the Parkway Saturday. It was blown into the roadway in the storm – with tree parts embedded into it..

Wow. I thought “middle” meant medians/infields of interchanges, would be nice if park police picked some of it up!

Until the Severe weather Watch/Warning came, I think few people knew.  I'm guessing not many people get the alerts on their phone either.  I got the watch at 6:36pm, warning came just after 10pm not too long before it hit.  Not only would a lot of people not know, but many may have blown it off as another normal storm (remember that Friday storm that was made out to be the storm of all storms?  Barely lost a twig).  I would hope that the power company had an idea, but I don't think anyone knew the severeness of the storm until it was too late.  Even the weather guys commented that they expected the storm to die a bit as it came down across the mountains…instead, it was instantly fueled.

They're calling for another set-up like Friday and Sunday night tonight.  You can bet your butt I won't be straying far, and will crank the A/C down a notch or two when I get home.  A similar set up occurred last night too, although it dissipated over Ohio.  Heat + funky jet stream = storms.
