Commute from Arlington to GMU

I’m starting a new job at GMU Fairfax campus and am trying to figure out the best route. Anyone drive that way during rush hour? My usual route is 66W to 123 S but I’m not sure if 50, 29, or the Beltway to Braddock would be better. I live in Court House.

I drive that way during rush hour. I have found that 66 is very unpredictable. One day it will be fine and the next day there is an accident or something and I just sit there crawling along. I usually take 50 but sometimes I take 29 if there is a problem on 50. Both are pretty predictable and move along quickly since the lights are timed well. Overall, there is less traffic on 29 but the speed limits are also lower.

66W is fine before 8 am, afterward it can be a mess

Will you be heading out that way with the morning rush hour or the evening rush hour (i.e. to teach night courses)? That makes all the difference in the world. If it’s the night commute, it will take you about 1.5 – 2 hrs driving so you might seriously want to consider taking the Metro to Vienna and then the GMU shuttle to campus. Or move to Fairfax.

Thanks for the responses. I’ll be heading out that way during the morning rush. My goal is to leave Arlington by 7:30/7:45 in the morning, to be on campus by 8:30.

I live in Clarendon and work at Fairfax GMU, usually taking 66 (if I don’t metro in) and getting on at the Spout Run ramp (66 and Lee Highway).  Most of the time if I get on 66 at 7:45 am, I’m on campus between 8:15 and 8:30 (yes, traffic depending).

Mason offers up to $240 ($245 starting 3/1/13) per month for public transportation, tax-free through the Commuter Choice Benefit Program:  http://transportation.gmu.edu/commuterchoice.html.   The shuttle buses (from Metro to Mason) run every 15 minutes, so I usually board a train at Clarendon between 7:20 am and 7:30 am, get to Vienna Metro a few minutes before 8 am to board the shuttle for campus.  With the shuttle, it will take 15-20 mins to get to campus, so I’m on campus before 8:30 am.

Hope the info helps!  And welcome to Mason :)

I work off of 123 in Fairfax, commuting from Court House.  I also find that 66 is too unpredictable in the morning, so I take 50.  It seems that if I leave before 8, it’s an even 30 min to get to my job locations.  I’ve 29 a couple times just to switch things up, but that seems to add another 10 minutes to the commute time.

Thanks for the help! Sounds like 50 might be my best bet. I would take metro, but I need to be back in Arlington before 6:00 to pick up my daughter from school, and I don’t think I’d make it leaving campus at 5:00 and taking the metro.

Ack.  I apologize for my poor grammar.  Guess it’s coffee time!

I would suggest metro to vienna and take Mason to Metro shuttle it runs every 30 mins during non rush hour and every 15 minutes during rush hour.  Extremely fast.
