Do you remember that NRA gun class that was held in Lyon Park?

Do y’all remember that NRA gun class that was held in Lyon Park back in May?

Apparently, the same guy is now holding concealed carry classes, but this time at a church in Arlington (Bloss Memorial Church on Barton St. Website is here). What do y’all think of this?

what's wrong with some education on gun safety and use?  nice for local residents to not have to drive out to the burbs for the same class.

I don't see why anyone would have a problem with this.

however on a somewhat similar note, this is a good basic educational video…

If the church is OK with it, I'm OK with it.

If you want a basic quick and dirty gun safety course, I'll give it to you for free as a responsible firearms owner and CCW permit holder:
    1. Treat every gun as if it is loaded no matter what – even if you are “positive” it's unloaded.
    2. Never point a gun at anyone, even if you are “positive” it is unloaded.
    3. Never put your finger on or near the trigger unless you are just about to shoot the firearm – even if you are “positive” it is unloaded.
    4. If you are ready to shoot, make sure there is nothing behind your target and no way the bullet can penetrate anything behind your target.

Follow these rules, and it's pretty tough to have an accident.

The fact is, guns are part of society. Even if they are outlawed, guns will still exist. Teaching people, how to treat a gun and firearms safety is a gppd idea. Children can still encounter guns at their friends houses or who knows where even if the parents hate guns. Education is never a bad thing

Um, good for him, but not a big deal. I think education towards responsible gun ownership is always a good thing.

If you can't shoot a coyote or wolf, what good is the right to bear arms?

It's actually too late! If someone in that theater had the appropriate concealed carry permit and a firearm, there is a better than good chance that many or all those poor people would still be with us.

do you honestly believe that a concealed pistol would have lasted more than  a half second against  a semiautomatic variation of the military’s M-16 rifle, a pump-action 12-gauge shotgun and at least one .40-caliber semiautomatic pistol ? It's time we stopped kidding ourselvles about this

I don't have a problem with gun classes- I've taken them before and you can learn a lot.

But the hero-fantasies about someone with a concealed weapon saving the day are pretty ridiculous, in my opinion- it's possible someone might save the day, but it's also possible that someone could panic and make the situation worse.  Not only is being under gunfire more terrifying than anything you can imagine (I have not been under fire, but I served with guys who had, and they told me about it- and the first time most people are under fire, even in the military, they freeze or panic), but what do the police do if they go into a crowded theater and multiple people are firing at each other?  What does a concealed, armed citizen do if two people in the theater are firing at each other- and one of them is dressed up like a SWAT team guy?

So you are saying that the shooter could fire all three at once? You do realize it's a lot easier to shoot a handgun? Especially at close range, the handgun is at an advantage. A rifle is long, and you can grab it, direct the barrel elsewhere, that's why when people in the military take someone prisoner, they stand pretty far away, further than if they were holding a handgun. And don't act like body armor is “bullet proof” making someone invulernable. Even if you shot him in the chest, not in the head, which would have killed him, you'd probably knock him out or give him severe pain from broken ribs, making it much more difficult for him to continue on.
