Dog Paws

Recently with the weather change my dogs paws have a odor. A very strong smell of fritos! Is there something in the ground at arlington dog parks? or is there something  wrong with my dog and his health? we wash his paws and the odor goes away up until we take him out to the dog park again. This corn chip like odor only comes when he has been at the park, not when we go for walks.

    Who sniffs their dog’s paws?

i don’t sniff them. you can smell the odor by being in the area of my pup.

Have you considered getting your pup some of those dog shoes I see on dogs from time to time?

Does you dog go in the water at the parks?  I’ve had this issue with moisture getting trapped in the hair between pads – it gets a little funky!  You can try to clip the hair short between your dogs pads and dry his feet well after walks to park visits.  If it persists,  a vet should be able to suggest a wash to eliminate the cause (I can’t remember if it is a fungus or bacteria but basically it gets too much moisture and goes a little haywire).

Have you checked your pantry? For missing bags of Fritos?

Frito would be a great name for a dog…

They are spreading fritos around the dog parks to create an incentive for the dogs to want to go to the park.

Swag, your dog is not so smart. He opened the bags from the wrong end.

@CourtLady I think I’ll try that.  He likes to get in the water most days at the dog park. I’ll clip down hair and dry off his paws when we are home.   I’ll do an update on the “Frito Paws” poor Chubbs has.

My dog Tommy (r.i.p.) had the same thing, here is what I read about it -

According to an article in Mental_Floss magazine,

“All these micro-organisms give off their own distinct odors (they're what give us BO), and the popcorn/corn chip smell on some dogs could be the fault of yeast or the bacterium Proteus, which are both known for their sweet, corn tortilla smell. Or it could be the bacterium Pseudomonas, which smells a little fruitier, but pretty close to popcorn to most noses.”

Pretty common from what I read on-line and nothing to worry about.

UPDATE: I wiped down the paws after our walk with a towel. The odor is gone went down. I’ll keep it up and maybe the odor will be gone fully.

Imagining someone saying “aww, poor Chubbs has Frito-feet!” has me laughing pretty hard at my desk. We used to wipe our dog’s feet down after any walk that was even slightly wet for this reason and simply to keep mud out of the house. Wet dogs smell :(

Also, just be glad it’s not an ear infection. My pup used to get those all the time and they smelled AWFUL. I wish he would’ve gotten espresso-ear or elderberry-ear. Heck, I would’ve even taken a Frito smell.
