Driving to Dulles Airport
  • Bella Luna November 7, 2012 - 9:50 am #54908 Reply

How terrible is traffic driving from Arlington to Dulles International Airport in the morning (on a weekday)? I have a flight at 10am and wanted to leave at 730am from here. Is that enough time to get there? I have never had a flight at this time in the morning- which is why I ask. Thanks!

It takes me about 35 – 45 min to head to the airport on the access road.  Just don't speed the airport cops are everywhere in the AM.

I used to drive that every Monday for a flight to LA. It really isn't bad since the majority of the traffic is in the opposite direction and you can use the Dulles Access Road. If you're unfamiliar with it, it runs along the Toll Road, but has no exits once you get on until you hit the airport. I have no idea how the construction has impacted traffic though since my travels were before it started.

On a side note, this may not exist anymore, but there was a “secret” security entrance by Baggage Claim 6 or 8 or 9 (can't really remember). It was on a completely different level from normal security, so no one saw it. Few people even knew of its existence. It used to be the old Dulles Diamond security line. The longest wait I ever had in that line was 2 people ahead of me, and I'm not exaggerating.

i commute from Ballston to Herndon every day using the toll road — and that usually takes me about 35-45 minutes. there's almost always a bottleneck from exits 71 to 72, but once you get past that, it moves pretty quickly. you'd obviously have to go a little farther than Herndon, but the airport access road is always less trafficked than the toll road.

    hope that helps!

Parking, too?  If so- the bus service from the economy lots is generally quite reliable.  Add 30 minutes for that to stay comfortable.

Is this the employee entrance? I entered down there once with my buddy who works for an airline, but I had to be accompanied with him in order to get by. Of course there wasn't a line, which was nice. If there is a second security entrance down there, I would like to certainly know about it!

It wasn't at the time. It was a normal, public security line that nearly no one knew about. This was almost 2.5 years ago, so it certainly could have changed. They had only recently finished the tram system.
