Any decent fishing holes in the area? Don't really care what I catch, just need a new hobby for the weekends while I wait for GW2.
Couple of questions – are you looking to eat what you catch, and is a boat a possibility or are you looking to stand on the shore?
Few spots:
– South of Fort Washington, near the light house.
– On the other side of the bay from Ft Washington (MD side, still), there are spots along the shore in National Colonial Farm.
– Southern shore of Pohick Bay
– In Mason Neck park, there is a creek off of Belmont Bay that's filled with fish.
All of these are a bit of a drive, of course. If you're looking local and easy, you can always catch stuff in the canal below G-Town. I've caught nothing larger than 6-10 inchers there, but I've seen folks pulling out larger fish. But don't eat them!
Theres a big river nearby that immediately comes to mind.
I often see several people fishing along the Custis Trail from (and on) Roosevelt Island down to Indigo Landing. Lots of folks seem to enjoy finishing from Ohio Drive drive off of Hains Point. Just make sure you have the correct permits for the jurisdiction.
Question about that: if you’re standing on the Virginia shore and fishing in water “owned” by the District, where do you get a permit?

I knew Pohick was decent (my sister used to run Pohick Bay Regional Park and the golf course), but yeah, I was looking for something a little closer. I'll probably try the canal next weekend if the temperature gets below 100
A couple months ago I saw a dude who had hauled out a massive, probably 50 lb+ catfish from 4 mile run right by the parkway bridge underpass. I was very impressed.

You definitely need a DC license for fishing DC waters (even if you're on the VA shore). DC doesn't have any reciprocal agreements with VA, but MD does.

But can DC enforce their regulations/license laws in Virginia?
Roaches Run (the inland cove north of Crystal City) has some decent bass in there, but it's tough to fish much of the water there without a canoe or kayak. Four Mile Run will hold some bass, catfish and snakeheads when the tide is up; it may take a few visits to find decent access points. A friend of mine and his son have had good success shore fishing at Belle Haven Marina just south of Old Town as well.
Also, check out this guy's website (http://www.switchfisher.com/index.html). He's got lots of info on good shore/wading spots in the area, especially upriver for smallmouth.

I think they can legally, but from a practical standpoint, they may not. Personally, I'd rather just pay the $13 for the year and not have to worry about it.
Swag,
Check out Tidal Potomac Fly Rodders. It's a local fly fishing club that's several hundred strong. Even if you don't fly fish, they have tons of resources on local spots to fish and what's biting where. DC has surprisingly good fishing for being a metropolitan area. Before I moved to DC, I used to fish ALL the time (5-7 times/week during the summer and 2-3 during the winter) for everything from sunfish to bluefin tuna, and this group has been indispensable for me getting to know this new area.
As far as the licenses, for the Potomac you need a different one depending on where you're fishing. Basically, if you're on a section of the Potomac that borders DC, you need a DC license even if you're fishing from the VA shore. If you're north, you need a MD license for the most part. To the south, you get away with a VA license for the most part. The Potomac is tricky with licenses, so check ahead to see what one you'll need for the section you plan on fishing. The good thing is all the licenses are pretty cheap, so you won't break the bank if you just buy them all to be safe. DC can enforce even if you're on VA shores since you're still fishing the body of water in DC.

If you’re above DC, all you need is a Virginia license, “Resident anglers with state freshwater licenses in Virginia or Maryland may fish the Potomac River and from both banks.” The same is pretty much true south of the city as far as the Rt. 301 bridge. South of h the Route 301 bridge, it gets a bit trickier.
