Just wondering where people buy their flowers/vegetable plants in Arlington. I usually go to the Home Depot in Falls Church, but it’s usually such a mad house, especially on the weekends. I’d really prefer to find a less chaotic place that is reasonably priced and not too far out of the way. Any suggestions?
Buckingham florist on Pershing and Glebe. Its been there for 75 years. They are the best in Arlington. NO argument.
Bill’s Garden Center on Lee Hwy @ Glebe Road; Ayers Variety & Hardware in Westover; Meadows Farms Nursery on Route 50 just west of Route 7 in Falls Church. Merrifield Garden Center on Lee Hwy @ Gallows is worth the trip for quality.
You can find most vegetable plants at the Courthouse farmers market. I would imagine the Westover farmers market probably has some sellers as well. The Meadows Farms on 50 has a great selection of vegetable plants. I have always found Bill’s to be hit or miss. Sometimes they have great flowers, sometimes they have squat. My wife has had weird luck getting great petunias from the Cherrydale Safeway.
If you are in South Arlington, the Columbia Pike Farmers market is in full swing. I just bought several kinds of basil and heirloom tomatoes there last weekend. Sunday from 9-1. For a comprehensive selection any day, Greenstreet Gardens at Braddock and Quaker Lane has it all. They have soil and equipment too, even trees and bushes.
Sam’s’ Farm on Rt 7 in Falls Church, Meadow Farms, Merrifield Garden Center. Merrifield has the best staff if you have questions. They are very knowledgeable and helpful. If you want to take a trip, American Plant Food Company on River Rd has good stuff.
Just another +1 for Meadow Farms, not too much further than the Home Depot. They have great deals on bagged compost as well.
However, if I had to pick one place to buy plants, it would be Courthouse Farmers’ Market. You can really find a great selection there, of both flowers and vegetables. Happy gardening!
