how long can you keep a personal vehicle parked on the street?
  • columbiapike June 18, 2012 - 10:04 pm #51159 Reply

does anyone know how long you can keep a personal vehicle parked on a county street without being in violation of county code or being considered an abandoned vehicle? i checked the county code but could not find a definitive answer. it seems like you can keep a vehicle parked indefinitely as long as it is properly licensed, registered, and operable. i'm looking for the time limit to keep a personal vehicle in a “vanilla” street parking spot (e.g., no parking meter, no residential zone). thanks.

You have to move it every two weeks, I think.  They used to leave notes on my car telling me to move it and they left chalk marks on the curb and on my tires to see if I had.  Only an inch or two was required.

10 days per Arl Cty Code (Section 14.2-3).  From experience, the police are unlikely to place notices or ticket the car if it belong to somebody 'nearby' (approximately the same block).

There's a street like that behind my building. A used car dealership used it for overflow parking for a while (without any problems as far as I know) and a bunch of County workers use it as a parking lot every day. Really just depends on a) if parking enforcement ever goes near your street and b) if anyone notices it's been there forever and complains.

There is someone that seems to be living in an RV on 21st st N. They originally had it by Bergmanns in front of the abandoned houses, and now it's moved across to 21st. Seems like a slippery slope to allow this, given real estate prices and rents around here – $2000 a month for a 1 bedroom versus…free?

This thread reminds me of the recent crime beat story- what ever happened to the Bum who was living in his car and stabbed that random drunk guy?

Did we ever find out the motivation for random drunk guy engaging the bum while he was (presumably) asleep?

If he has a place of his own in which to live (his car), is he really a bum?

It's a very slippery slope.  That's why we see so many people living in RVs throughout the city.

I hope it is more than 10 days, we will be taking advantage of the European melt down and taking a family trip for half of July and all of August, my car will sit in front of the house for the duration.

What are you taking advantage of? Looks like the dollar is still only worth 0.8 Euro, and airfare is through the roof. Just curious because I'd like to plan a trip if the cost ever became reasonable.

Airfare was reasonable, and relatively cheap compared to the last decade or so.  The real savings comes in the high end hotels that have slashed their prices due to the dip in demand.  Spending time in Nice, Paris, Rome, Geneva, and still planning out Germany.  Wish we had had the foresight to get some Olympic tickets, but they are through the roof.

Seriously? I haven’t been able to find anything into continental Europe any time in the next 9 months for under $1000, with the exception of taking Turkish to IST and then cutting back into the continent.

UPDATE: Holy crap yeah to the hotels…just searched Geneva for some August mid-week date, you're right about that one…nice downtown stuff for under $150 US.

Paying half that into Paris from a fare that popped up on Orbits or Travelosity last month on a day some more bad news came out of Greece.
