Is it safe to say novasteve killed this place?

I think it’s safe to say so

Nah. N-steve had good posts to go with the bad, but the bad got a lot more attention, brought about the moderation and drove some of the moderate, happy posters away.

<span style=”line-height: 1.5em;”>Personally, I still like the forums because I don’t get banned over here nearly as much as I do in the comments.</span>

Steve contributed nothing. Name one topic in which he ever posted about in which he didn’t make an obscene analogy or turn it into an outright pissing contest.

There were plenty. I know for one, he was always good with any updates on the 10th St/Rt 50 interchange updates when I asked about them.

Plenty of other posters have left snarky or totally unhelpful or offtopic (bonus points for trying to bring up another controversial subject) comments on other conversations I’ve been a part of, so it’s not like he was a core problem, he was just another poster that went off topic. Plenty of useful, and non-useful, conversations have occurred on here since the moderation implementation

I prefer NS over the people who always argue with him. He was also good with German food/culture goings-on.

His crockpot cookery discussions were pure genius.

It’s still alive. But he definitely stunted its growth, at least when he was actually posting as NovaSteve and every post was a political one. Since he changed his name he’s mostly been fine.

Probably because only longtimers know who he is and feel the need to attack him, whether he’s on topic or not. I think it wasn’t him, but the backlash, that really killed this board (and still sort of does)

PS- The funny thing is I remember him calling that Metro wouldn’t open the SL until late summer and it would be a complete crapfest. Everyone flamed him. Here we are, July 26th, waiting for the SL trains to muck up half of Arlington’s commute

Is this another self-imposed exile? I haven’t seen anything from him a while.

Hey remember when those outsiders came in and thoroughly doxxed NS? The posts were only up for a few hours, but offered a fascinating, if only partially believable, insight into the NS phenomenon.

I think that was him using different aliases.  Those aliases were created the day of and there’s no way anyone anonymously on the internet could know the stuff they posted.  It was just another form of his attention-seeking behavior.

I don’t think it’s safe to say he killed it at all.

Plus, his penchant for playing the wildcard kept me legitimately entertained. I don’t remember when I joined, but I do remember it being in his heyday. I had to do a little thread-searching to find out why people got so pissed off at him, so that helped acclimate me to the way the forum worked as well. Apart from the fact that I get polite answers to my most persistent questions when I use the forum, I still maintain his presence is among the reasons I grew to love posting and lurking alike.

I think he turned the forum into something it wasn’t really designed to be, so his absence just brings it back to its intended purposes.

But yes, he definitely scared away some people who would have otherwise contributed in a positive way to the forum AND to the commenting.

    @Bard

He was posting as “ahum” for a while then got caught ranting about smoking bans and outed himself. I don’t think he’s posting here at all anymore under any other handle.
