ITT we compile a list of potential dive bars in Arlington – North and South

How about we come up of a list of places that isn't the typical “Tavern” place with the trendiest local fair trade etc. Where are places where you can get inexpensive beers (meaning not paying $8 for a pint) and if you are hungry, bar food?

Anything is fair game. All I care is that it has an actual bar, not just a restaurant that serves beer. What about those hispanic places on Glebe road? Anything. Just list them please.

Despite the location and clientele, I don't see how Hunan Number One couldn't qualifty to be a dive bar. It has a concrete floor and exposed piping for a ceiling. It's always dark. Beer is $6 a liter from open to close. No matter what you order, pretty much all the food tastes the same. It has a 6-foot-tall inflatable jager bottle and the toilets are always broken. What more do you want??!!

Jay's Saloon is obviously the royalty of dive bars.

I guess. You still get hipster douches showing up there.

I think we can put Summers on this list. I dont' think they try to advertise their food as being organic and locally grown..

Okay, this might eliminate 100% of the places, but are there any bars in arlington that don't get teh clarendouche type crowd? That's why I'm thinking the hispanic places might be the place to check out.

North: Jay's, Hunan, First Down, O'Sullivans (divey for Clarendon), Cowboy Cafe, Ragtime, Bailey's

    South: LA Bar

I suppose it would help to clarify what a dive bar actually is.  I like this WikiPedia definition: “Dive bars generally have a relaxed and informal atmosphere—they are often referred to by local residents as “neighborhood bars,” where people in the neighborhood gather to drink and socialize.”

The Forest Inn at Westover surely must qualify on all counts.

Dive = no clarendouches, so I'd rule out Osullivans.

First down is hip hoppy. That's not a dive. Ragtime is too family friendly.

First Down is not “hip hoppy”.  I go there nearly every week and usually someone is playing country music and 80s rock.

Every time I've been there they have a DJ playing hip hop. Everyone is wearing sports jerseys.

Definitely not hip hoppy.  You'll see jerseys on football days or other significant sports days but not often otherwise.  DJs are very rare there, maybe once a quarter.  It's a very relaxed, come as you are kinda place.  The music is controlled by whomever puts money in the jukebox, so you can get anything from urban to country, depending on timing.  Tuesdays get crowded with trivia, Thursdays with all-you-can-eat wings, but can be hit or miss other nights, crowd-wise.

What N-steve is trying to say is that he went there once and saw a black guy.
