July 3-4th What’s fun in Arl or DC?

Needs some help from the forum. I have a friend coming in from NY for July 3rd and 4th. I want to show him a great time but don't want to go anywhere near the mall or possibly DC in general for the 4th. What are some fun things going on locally or other parts of DC (away from the mall) I was thinking about going to Cantina Marina July 3rd….what's the haps in Arlington?

The only thing listed in Arlington is a festival at Long Bridge Park, which will stay open for a view of the DC fireworks. Probably a decent spot.

You can also go to the dress rehearsal for the concert on the mall on July 3. Didn't know that.

    Mt. Vernon is another option.

Depends on whether you have kids or not.

No kids…and would like to avoid places with lots of kids.

Start drinking early and see where the day goes…

The Air Force Memorial has a great view of the fireworks and they have a little orchestra play beforehand http://www.airforcememorial.org/

Definitely not the zoo that is the Mall for the fireworks, but a fun vibe.  Went last year and had fun (despite a little bit of rain prior to the fireworks).  I'd recommend getting there early and bringing a blanket to sit on.

I like Iwo Jima/Netherlands Carrillion as a firework watching spot, it's pretty popular, so plan to get there early, but not as early as needed for DC fireworks.  If you're closer to the Carillion area, you have a sweeping view of the Washington Monument, Capitol, and Lincoln Memorial
