Late mail delivery
  • INF November 26, 2013 - 6:11 pm #94607 Reply

Has anyone else noticed how late mail is getting delivered lately? The other night, we didn’t get our mail until after 11pm. Last night, it didn’t come at all. What is going on? Anyone know?

Have also noticed.  No clue as to why.

My mailman is always late around this time of year but It has been more noticeable. He also stuffs my mail box so all my mail is mushed up.

I’ve also noticed I get things way later than normal.  My fiance lives in Falls Church and he gets all the same catalogs before I do.  A magazine I subscribe to used to come by the end of the second week of the month.  I just got it this past Saturday.  I almost called to check if they missed me by mistake.  Thought it was just me…

Looks like it is not just on this side of the river. Timely article in today’s Wash Post.

Tyson Barnette would arrive at the post office in Landover Hills each workday about 10 a.m. He'd change out of his designer tennis shoes, pick up his deliveries and start filling mailboxes in the Prince George's County community of Kentland. Often it would be after 7 p.m. before Barnette would return to the office.

On Saturday, he was working a new route, one that also would keep him out until after dark, when he was fatally shot.

Mail delivery in Penrose has gotten abysmal in the last year or so. Late deliveries, no delivery, extremely inconsistent delivery of subscriptions, stuffing the mailbox with no consideration for the condition of the mail, etc.

It’s crazy. I complained using the USPS’s online form but got no response.

I have seen my mail carrier and he’s clearly too old and out of shape to be doing the job. Is this the best that USPS can do?

I saw my mail guy delivering the other day at like 8pm. He’s usually there around 6ish.

I believe this is a problem in a lot of neighborhoods. I’m sure a lot of you heard about the postal carrier who was killed in Maryland a few days ago.  The news said that he was doing his route later and later. I think it has to do with the post office being reluctant to hire additional staff due to budget cuts. So if someone leaves they just increase everyone else’s work load.

@speonjosh I live in Penrose area too.  I know we need more mailman in the area but the mushing of the mail i can’t deal with.  I even called the post office a few months ago about it. My mail still ends up mushed.

Tyson Barnette how tragic. I pray for his family.

Our guy delivers around 8-9pm and he wears a head lamp. We have gone 2-3 days without mail and then our box is crammed full. I kind of feel sorry for the guy. It’s late and dark.  He would probably rather be home having dinner with his family. I hope he’s getting some good overtime!

@Sunshine I think we have the same mail man, is he a older dark brown skinned man? He mushes our mail ALL THE TIME!!

Our mailman is Chinese. He’s a sweetheart! Always stops to pet my dog, and chat. Talks to me about traditional Chinese food. But lately, he’s not always the one delivering. I didn’t get any mail at all on Monday. Then Tuesday, I received one delivery at 7pm, and another one after 9pm! Delivery has been inconsistent and many times, shoddy. Online tracking for items I’ve ordered claim USPS delivered to my door, but they often show up the day AFTER! My daughter shipped out to Marine Corps basic training in October, so you can imagine, I literally live at that mailbox, expecting letters from her, and I often stay up late just so I can grab the mail.

Inspector general to probe late mail delivery

The U.S. Postal Service Inspector General's office said Wednesday that it is launching an investigation into the shift in mail delivery to evening hours, a change that's alarmed letter carriers and customers.

In my neighborhood, it is related to which carrier is working. Our regular guy – Bruce – gets everything delivered in a timely fashion. The woman that works Saturdays and fills in when Bruce is off is horrible. The mail doesn’t come until 7-8pm or even later. If we leave our garage door open, she throws the mail into the garage rather than putting it in the mail slot in the front door. Any package more than 1/2lb gets left in the driveway. I chalk it up to sheer laziness.

@Sunshine – does your carrier also talk loudly on his blue tooth? Ours wears the head light and shares his personal business with the neighborhood via loud conversations on his phone. He also delivers late and can’t be bothered to lower the flag after picking up mail.
