Any thoughts about the Mr Tire in Clarendon? I went there over the weekend to get new tires and was a little irritated about how long the whole thing took (more than 4 hours). But it's conveniently located and I liked the people.
Can anyone comment either for or against this place? I'm considering having them do some other work.
After my last visit, I vowed to never go back again. They are the kind of business that focuses most of their efforts on upselling you on unnecessary things. They'll find things wrong that don't exist.
Gotta say I felt completely burned the last time I went there. I felt like I was cheating on Joyce Motors, but I was desperate. I was told I needed new shocks to pass inspection…should have gotten a second opinion. I told 'em to go for it and $1100 later the ride was worse. I ran out of steam on the matter and did not pursue it considering I drive my truck once a month at most.
I went to Mr. Tire for the first time a few weeks ago to get my oil changed. Yes the wait was long, but I just left the car for the day and didn't worry about waiting (it's not far from the metro and there's a bike share station across the street). I was incredibly impressed at how they did not try to upsell me. My car is 10 years old and has over 149,000 miles on it. They could have easily sold me on a bunch of things considering the age of the car and the high mileage, but they told me everything was running fine and not to even bother with the 150,000 mile check up. They majorly earned my trust and I will definitely go back.
they tried to overcharge my friend. i recommended she head to joyce. joyce did the necessary work for about half what mr. tire quoted.
i do know people who've had positive experiences there, but if you have a reputable, skilled, honest mechanic in joyce so close, i don't know why you'd go anywhere else.
I’ve been there a few times but they’ll never get another dollar from me. The customer service was piss poor and they tried to sell me things I didn’t need. They told me I needed an alignment, and that my brake fluid was overdue to be changed. Which is funny, because not even 2 months prior, my car received an alignment and brake fluid change at the dealer.
Worse still, they tried to tell me that I was *required* to have them perform those services, because they claimed my car would not pass VA safety inspection without them, and they claimed they weren’t allowed to release the car to me unless it passed inspection! Huh?? I wasn’t even there for a VA inspection, I was there for tires. If that isn’t a scam, I don’t know what is.
Avoid this Mr Tire like the plague.
I've also had a bad experience there. I had the rear tires replaced on my last M3 and they did a number on the rim on one of the wheels. They then tried to claim it was already there (it wasn't – I had just washed the car and it wasn't there, and it was also on the non-parallel parking side) despite their attempt to hide it by slobbing their goopy lubricant over it (and no where else on the wheel).
I had a good experience with tires from them a couple months ago. Got a full set installed, road force balancing, everything. Better deal than TireVan, TireRack + install, or a couple other local places. Many places could not get the tires I wanted but they could. They did the install on time as advertised and while they did use a lot of goopy lubricant I have no complaints. These were 255/35/18 rears so not easy tires to install either.
Mr. Tire — redistributes money from your wallet to service reps, technicians and company via sale of unneeded things and services.
I stopped going to the Mr Tire in Clarendon and tried the Mr Tire on Lee Highway. The Clarendon location is always mobbed and you don't always get a friendly person working with you there.
I don't know if they are owned by the same people but I had a totally different(better) experience at the Lee Highway location. I didn't feel like I was being upsold as hard (they did make some suggestions, but nothing pushy). I've had a tire repaired there and replaced another tire there.
I've used to have good experiences with Mr. Tire in Clarendon. Not great, but OK. A few years ago they didn't do state inspections. Now they do. Not sure I'd go back. It's more crowded now.
Here's a piece of unsolicited advice to VA newcomers: Avoid taking your car to a garage with more than one service bay for an annual inspection. Not saying Mr. Tire or any other large garage is dishonest, but I just don't do it.
Maybe it's just my BS theory, but my reasoning is that if they've only got one bay, it's to their advantage to just inspect as many cars as they can, instead of finding things wrong to fix. But if the inspecting garage has more than one service bay, they can use one bay for inspections and one for repairs, giving them some incentive to tell you your sh*t is f*ckt, and that they can fix it. In ten years, I've never been failed by small shops, and almost always been failed by bigger ones.
Mr. Tire is a ripoff. They charge too much and will not honor their own best-price guarantee. Apparently, no other tire stores in Arlington offer “comparable” services (such as installing new tires).
There is a garage near the Hess gas station at 10th and Wilson Blvd that will fail you almost every time and conveniently offer to fix your problems right away for really high prices. And yet, they almost always have a long line of cars waiting for inspections (i.e., to be hosed).
