Petition to lobby for metro accessible Redboxes
  • novasteve May 9, 2013 - 12:31 pm #72709 Reply

While its nice that they are at a few 7-11s and at giant, safeways, etc. I have never seen a redbox near a metro stop. There are days that go by that I don’t drive and thus don’t have access to a redbox without at least a 10 minute hike. Anyone know of secret redboxes near Courthouse or Clarendon or possibly VA Square?

Wilson Boulevard really is void of them. Lyon Village Giant, the crappy Safeway in Rosslyn, and the VA Square giant. There’s one at Washington and Pershing as well but still not close to all this lovely population growth we’ve seen.

I was thinking the 7-11 on washington blvd but that’s too far out of my way to go to on the way home. I’d rather have something on the way home than to have to go out driving. On occasion I go to the Giant at Va square after work and walk home with the groceries, but it’s not that often because it’s kind of pain to walk that far with groceries.. Wish the CVSs at Courthouse and Clarendon had redboxes.

I’m guessing it comes down to partnering at the national level. They’ve made deals with 7-11 and Giant because they are high foot-traffic nationwide, without really considering site-specific demograhics.

A deal with CVS would be great as they could hit Rosslyn, Courthouse, and Clarendon Metros in one stroke.

Do you think a redbox machine could handle the volume of metro traffic though? I once in a while at a7-11 get one that won’t even let you return a DVD because it is full.. Though I think the opposite would be the problem near a metro stop. They might run out of titles too quickly for the system to sell fix it self  with returns.

@NS: Have you considered writing a letter to REDBOX and to WMATA requesting same?

well 2 machines side by side would help. Or taking the video games out of some. Sidewalk space is at a premium in this part of town and they’re probably conflicted on whether to put them inside a CVS with no windows (even though its 24 hours). I haven’t been down there in awhile, but is that building entrance in the Clarendon metro mezzanine still closed to foot traffic?

There used to be one in the 7-11 inside the Clarendon Reserve building.  It got taken out about a year or so ago, never replaced.  Maybe too many drunks?
