Wilson Tavern

True or false: Wilson Tavern is better than Kitty O'Shea's and is an emerging adult beverage establishment super-power.

It has quickly become my go-to local bar in Clarendon.  I hear they are knocking down the wall and expanding into the office space next door.

If you're ever there on a Friday night, just ask the craziest guy in the bar if he is TheMissile.Cool

Don’t love the place myself. Servers are slow, music is TERRIBLE and way too f’ing loud. Those two issues can be fixed, though. I stop by once in a while but would go more often if it the music were even slightly less obnoxious. Definitely preferred Kitty’s, and even preferred Wilson Tavern part 1

Jeez, man. I used to go there YEARS ago before it was Kitty O'Sheas, when I lived at 2201 right next door (2004 timeframe).  Used to be good for a spring/autumn night for sitting outside drinking CHEAP beer.

There have to be better scenes though. First off, that area is Courthouse, I'm pretty sure. Second… Galaxy Hut and Iota are down the street. Those are both markedly better choices.  Heck, Ragtime has to be better that joint, just based on size.

How is the beer selection?   That's usually what draws me to a bar.  I walk past it all of the time, and honestly never stopped because I didn't like the last place that much.

    On another note. . .

I like Galaxy Hut, and Iota the best out of any of the bars in the walkable area.  Mostly because they're a little more relaxed.

I think I get sensory overload at other places, and it causes me too much stress.  Too many kids that only come up to my chest, 50 tv's, loud music (“Pour some Sugar on Me” come the @#$% on with that @#@$),  Mr. Supersports fan that's probably never played any sport competitively but will sit there screaming at the tv when drunk like his life is going to end should “his” team not win (no offense to my girlfriend who does this when sober), and whatever else that makes some of these places annoying.

Bard– You are spot-on with the music.  They bring DJs in who really crank up the music disproportionately to the size of the bar.  What did you mean by Wilson Tavern Part 1?

Newty– You are right, it is in Courthouse.  My fault.  Galaxy Hut isn’t bad but Iota kind of gives me the creeps.  I can’t put my finger on why.  Ragtime also doesn't float my boat.  Thoughts on Hunan One?

B22201– Beer selection at Wilson Tavern is sub par.  Great bartenders, however.  I agree 100% with your sports comment.  Especially since I am the only man in Arlington that does not follow any sports at all.

I agree…music is too loud, even when there is no DJ.  Beer selection is weak.

But…outdoor seating is nice, and the place has potential to be a good place if they just fixed the above two problems.  It's located well away from the obnoxious crowd and could draw in a similar crowd to Fireworks if it just improved their beer and food selection.

Isn't it getting torn down eventually for a high rise to be built up?  I thought I read that here earlier this year.

I was told by the bar staff that they are knocking down the wall to expand.  I doubt they would bother if they were going to get torn down.  Maybe that deal fell through.

I agree with your Fireworks jab.  Everyone in that place is a clown.  I guess the reason I like WT is because there are fewer “bros” in there that are looking to fight if your shoulder accidently grazes theirs.

True, but  how can you get by that awful beer list?  That list belongs in some cheesy college bar.  It's truly awful.  If they're out of Sierra Nevada, you're screwed.

And the wines are horrendous, as the bartender admitted.

Been to Hunan One a single time and didn't really care for it.

Personally, I used to be a Hard Times man.  The upstairs bar is great and I used to know every single bartender/server in there… so there was no problem getting a seat… I'd just text and they'd reserve me a seat at the bar. The turnover is high over there due to management, so I've moved on.

Now I know everyone at First Down in Ballston and they have great service and cheap beer.  They have a pretty decent selection on tap too.  And, the food there is pretty damn good.  That's a great spot if you don't mind metro'ing over to Ballston. The happy hour is dirt cheap.  Cheapest in the area that I've found and the beer is always ice cold.  There's rumors that they are getting a wing challenge and a wall of flame soon. I'm definitely planning to be on the top of that list.

I'm also slowly getting hooked on A-Town. More expensive, but the happy hour is almost unbeatable for the area. And it runs until 8pm, which is awesome.

I love me some easy times at Hard Times.  See what I did there? hehe.  Their Texas chili needs work but yeah, not a bad spot at all.  I've been to First Down as well.  Solid spot.  The boneless wings I had there were sub par, but I can deal.

A-Town: is it better than the Caribbean Breeze that used to be there?  I've been to A-Town once and it was great.  Bangin' calamari.

Let's not forget about CARPOOL!!!  That's the money spot right there.

I used to be a long time Carpool regular.  The beer is often so warm it wouldn't even be considered drinkable in Germany.  And, for the new options in Ballston, it's highly overpriced. It's sad, too, because I know almost all of the bartenders and some of the wait staff, yet I hardly ever see them any longer.  I still stop in from time to time to say hi, but I'm certainly not a daily fixture like I used to be.

I don't like Front Page… I just don't like the lay out. Mad Rose is okay on occasion (my two friends LOVE it) but I really don't care for it at all.  Circa happy hour on Friday has been a staple of mine for the last few months and that's not bad. I stopped in over the weekend and had a beer at Cava… although it wasn't very happenin' in there… it's a nice place and I wouldn't mind trying it again.

I definitely need to get over to Fuego, the new tequila bar.  I've been meaning to stop in, but I just haven't gotten around to it.

Do you know Mike the bartender at Carpool?  He is the man.

My roommate waits tables at Circa.

I dislike Mad Rose, Sobe is much better.

I stay far, far away from tequila.

Yeah, Mike @ Carpool is definitely one of the good guys.

wilson tavern pt 1 had more of an upscale urban bistro vibe. really good beer, reasonably good food but the service was horrendous, it did not attract many people under 30 and as a result they changed management and made it the bro-centric dive it is now.

i'm told that it's not going anywhere for 3-5 years. the long term plan is to develop the block, but that's going to take a long time due to zoning, neighborhood complaints, permitting, etc.
