Strong, gusty winds are knocking down tree branches large and small around Arlington.
Broken branches have been falling on roadways and on power lines, keeping police and power company crews busy all afternoon. As of 3:00 p.m., there were between 250 and 1,000 Dominion customers without power in Arlington, according to the company’s web site.
The free tasting includes “a diverse lineup of red, white, and sparkling… from top winemakers in Italy, Spain, and California and including a Prosecco and a splashy red from Rioja.”
The event will take place from 6:00 to 8:00 tonight.
Today the Clarendon Alliance announced that in lieu of this year’s Mardi Gras parade, which was canceled due to snow, Clarendon will host a St. Patrick’s Day parade.
The parade is being held on Tuesday, March 16, the night before St. Paddy’s Day. It will kick off at 8:00 p.m. on Wilson Blvd at N. Barton St. The parade will then head up Wilson Blvd to the Clarendon Metro.
The snow we were expecting, for once, did not materialize. Instead, it looks like we’ll have 40-50 mile per hour wind gusts later today.
County road crews, who were prepared to temporarily halt pothole repairs to focus on clearing snow, can now continue patching Arlington’s pockmarked streets.
Del. David Englin (D), who represents part of Arlington in the Virginia House of Delegates, released a statement today about the proposed elimination of the Virginia Commission for the Arts. Englin called the Republican-backed measure a “shortsighted, high-risk scheme.”

RESISTING ARREST-ARREST 02/18/10, 2200 block of S. Kenmore Street. On February 18 at 1:45 am when an officer attempted to arrest a man for an outstanding warrant, the suspect fought the officer and fled the area on foot. The suspect was apprehended and found to be in possession of narcotics. John Hart, 46, of Arlington, was charged with Resisting Arrest and Possession of Narcotics. He was held without bond.
ASSAULT AND BATTERY-ARREST 02/18/10, 4100 block of S. Walter Reed Drive. On February 18 at 5 pm, a man assaulted another man after a road rage incident. Pablo Lopez, 38, of Arlington, was charged with Assault and Battery. He was released on a summons.
Under the proposed county budget, Arlington’s libraries will lose seven staff members, will no longer acquire compact discs or periodicals, and will face a dramatic cut in operating hours.

The City of Falls Church and the Washington Area Music Association are hosting the 24th annual WAMMIE awards at the State Theater (220 N. Washington St., Falls Church) this coming Sunday. In addition to the main event, Falls Church is holding a number of “meet and greet” pre-parties at local eateries.
The pre-parties run from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m.
After missing a week of classes due to Snowmageddon and Snoverkill, Arlington public school students will have to make up for it by giving up a couple of previously-scheduled off-days and early release days.
“Of course I was hoping school would extend into August so I could save on summer camp fees,” Robert Cannon said on his bArlington blog.
Dr. Murphy says the school system, facing a $12.8 million budget deficit, cannot afford the nearly half million dollars worth of mechanical upgrades needed to keep the 40-year-old planetarium open.
The planetarium is named after David Brown, a Yorktown High School graduate who perished in the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. Dr. Murphy says the science wing at Yorktown High will be named in Mr. Brown’s honor after the planetarium closes.

National Weather Service has issued a Winter Storm Watch for our area, beginning late Wednesday night through Thursday night. There is potential for 5 or more inches of snow.
