Whether you’re Irish or not, there’s something special about St. Patrick’s Day. The green attire and green beer seems to go hand-in-hand with the greener grass and warmer weather.
No matter where you live in Arlington, there are plenty of options for going out and celebrating with a pint or three.
One week from today, suicide prevention organization CrisisLink is holding its annual LinkUp & Live gala and auction at the Clarendon Ballroom. CrisisLink is looking for volunteers to work at the event.
“We need your help to make sure important event runs smoothly—from setup, greeting, registration, auction tables and bid sheets, coat check, floaters, and take-down,” CrisisLink told Volunteer Arlington.
The family of the late astronaut David Brown, for whom the David M. Brown Planetarium is named, has written a letter opposing Arlington Public Schools’ plan to close the 40-year-old facility, according to the Washington Post.
Brown was killed in the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster. Brown’s brother, Douglas Brown, asked school officials why it’s necessary to close the only public planetarium in the country’s 10th-richest county.
Chain Bridge is currently blocked due to an accident with injuries. We’re hearing that three people are being brought to the hospital.
Arlington will spend more than $2 million for street, sidewalk, streetlight and other community improvements in various locations around the county. The board approved the projects at its meeting last night.
Neighborhoods where projects will take place include Boulevard Manor, Arlington Heights, Bluemont, Alcova Heights, Madison Manor, Arlington-East Falls Church and Waycroft Woodlawn.
As first reported by Shirlington Village Blogspot, the new Burger Joint should open at some point next month.
This is the company’s fourth location. Other locations include Bethesda, Dupont Circle and Old Town Alexandria.
Last night’s Clarendon St. Patrick’s Day (eve) parade had it all: bagpipers, kids dancing, Mardi Gras beads, roller derby girls, a leprechaun on a unicorn, a Republican congressional candidate, white guys in sombreros, and — of course — drag queens. A common theme has emerged from the Arlington Police Department’s daily crime reports. Thieves have been targeting parked cars in Arlington, breaking into multiple vehicles on the same block with surprising regularity.
The location of the crimes has varied, as has the type of items taken from the vehicles. Wheels, GPS navigation units, even coins have been reported stolen.
The annual Arlington Home Show and Expo will return next month with numerous opportunities to learn about the latest trends in home improvement and green technology.
The expo is being held from 10:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m. on Saturday, April 10, at the Walter Reed Community Center (2909 16th St. S.).
Spider Kelly’s has quietly taken the paper off the windows and opened for business, attracting about 100 customers last night, its first night open since renovations began in December. What would have been a big crowd at a normal bar was well under a quarter of Spider Kelly’s certified capacity of 455.
Pool tables, shuffleboard tables, dart boards and arcade-style video games have been brought in to add “more fun” to the neighborhood hangout. The well-received, value-priced menu has been expanded (more on that after the jump). Outdoor sidewalk seating for about 32 people will be added once the weather is warm enough, probably by the beginning of May.
Homegrown floats will roll down the parade route towards the Clarendon Metro station, accompanied by people in costume. Expect plenty of green beads to be thrown to the crowd lining Wilson Blvd.
No word yet on whether organizers will also be distributing purple and yellow beads. The St. Patrick’s Day parade was created as a substitute for the annual Mardi Gras parade, which was canceled this year due to snow.
The Shirlington Village Blog reports that the new Dogma is opening in the storefront where Curves used to be. Expect the store to open by May 1st.
