Washington Golf Center, its sign easily recognizable by I-395 commuters, has abruptly closed. The 30,000 square foot warehouse-style store, founded in 1978, was located at 2625 Shirlington Road. The store’s web site, washingtongolf.com, has apparently been taken down, and the store’s phone number has been disconnected.

There was no immediate explanation for the closure. A commenter at Shirlington Village Blogspot said employees denied the store was going out of business until it closed this weekend.

Home Sales Surge — Home sales in Arlington County were up 29 percent during the first three months of the year, the Sun Gazette reports. The average price of homes sold rose nearly four percent. Home sales were down more than five percent in Fairfax County.

Bike Show Recap –Last week’s third annual Phoenix Bikes bike show was a success. The event, held in Ballston, serves as a fundraiser for the non-profit bike shop. More than 250 people attended, according to the Commuter Page Blog. With the price of admission set between $20 and $25, the show would have raised at least $5,000, excluding proceeds from the silent auction.

Volunteer Opp: Doorways for Women and Family

Doorways for Women and Families, an Arlington-based crisis shelter, is looking for a volunteer to support its mission of ending family homelessness and domestic violence.

The volunteer would help answer the shelter hotline, support women in need, and assist with day-to-day operations. Doorways expects volunteers to work at least 8-12 hours per month after completing 20-30 hours of training. Click here to apply.
