The eighth congressional district of Virginia, which Rep. Jim Moran (D) has represented since 1991, is considered one of the safest Democratic seats in the House of Representatives.
This year, however, with political discontent over the Democratic health care reform effort nearing the boiling point, Republicans see an opportunity to, at the very least, force Democrats to devote more resources than usual to re-electing Moran, at a time when they can least afford it.
A man that witnesses identified as a parking attendant was hit by a van as he directed the driver into a parking spot in a small lot behind Boulevard Woodgrill (2901 Wilson Boulevard) in Clarendon Friday night.
The driver of the van accidentally hit the gas instead of the brake, a police officer at the scene said. The van apparently hit the man, smashed into a wood fence and sideswiped an adjacent car.
Firefighters put out a small brush fire in Courthouse this afternoon. A pile of fallen leaves and branches caught fire near a power substation at the Woodbury Park apartments. The flames were quickly extinguished.
It’s not clear how the fire started, although Dominion Power was evaluating the substation following the fire.
Update at 2:15 p.m. — Management is hinting that the public may be able to stop by “soft-opening” events this weekend. One such event is taking place tonight — they’re advising people to stop by after 10:00 p.m.
The ink still damp on the ABC permit that arrived this morning, management at Lyon Hall (3100 Washington Boulevard) is hard at work preparing to open to the public on Tuesday. A small armada of beer and wine vendors will start delivering their wares today.
Metro is warning riders to expect up to 40 minute delays on the Blue and Orange lines this weekend as crews replace old track components, including a switch at the Rosslyn Metro Station.
The track work, which is also taking place on the Green and Red lines, comes on a weekend when Nationals, Capitals and DC United games are scheduled in the District.
Earth Day is coming up on Thursday and there’s plenty to do this weekend to celebrate. Unfortunately, everything seems to be happening on Saturday, so hopefully you have a fast-but-fuel-efficient car to get you from place to place.
Rain Garden Creation — From 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. on Saturday, volunteers will transform an empty construction site in Rosslyn into a beautiful urban space and rain garden. Volunteers will plant, paint, and install furniture at the site on North Monroe Street and Wilson Boulevard. The temporary urban green space will open on Earth Day.
It’s a beautiful day, and it’s only getting better as the temperature heats up into the low 80s. But along with the warm temperatures and the low, spring-time humidity, gusty winds are expected, and that could present a dangerous combination.
The National Weather Service has, believe it or not, issued a wildfire warning for the area this afternoon. Although we live in an urban area, there’s still the danger that small brush fires can pop up on days like this. Typically, those are confined to small, self-extinguishing blazes that start in highway medians or next to dry athletic fields — wide open spaces with lots of dry grass and other kindling — but it doesn’t hurt to be vigilant about where you flick your cigarette today.

In Crystal City this afternoon, a man partially fell into a small utility manhole on the edge of the sidewalk after the plastic manhole cover collapsed.
You may not realize it, but Arlington was once home to the biggest, baddest radio towers in the world.
The U.S. Navy Radio Station was built in 1910 on what is now Columbia Pike, overlooking the nation’s capital. The 600-foot high, 100,000 watt towers were monsters, able to transmit signals much farther than your standard AM or FM broadcast today.
The Arlington Commission on Aging and the Commission on Long-Term Residences need volunteers of all ages to help speak out for the needs of Arlington’s older residents. It’s an opportunity to exercise your communication skills while representing those who live in nursing homes, assisted living, independent senior residences and seniors living at home. Volunteers must be Arlington residents.

The circumstances were even more somber. Lucy McCausland, the owner of a.k.a. spot, was moving to Florida to be closer to her family following the passing of her mother. After some soul-searching, she had decided that traveling back and forth between Florida and Arlington would not be feasible.
But last night McCausland made the bittersweet announcement. While a.k.a. spot was closing, its legacy of promoting pet wellness would be preserved.
This will the first mid-Atlantic location for the Brooklyn, New York-based Fitness Collective, which some have described as “a gym for people who don’t like going to gyms.”
“Clarendon Fitness Collective is a specialized fitness center that combines strength, cardio, flexibility, and nutrition into a program specialized for each individual,” Rodriguez said
