Ohno, the country’s most decorated Winter Olympian, is scheduled to visit the school on Tuesday, April 20. His visit is sponsored by the Arlington-based Century Council, a liquor industry-funded group that fights drunk driving and underage drinking.

Simply put, P. Brennan’s is massive. The soon-to-open Irish pub occupies a total of 8,000 square feet on the ground level of the Halstead apartments at 2910 Columbia Pike, next to Lost Dog Cafe and across from Arlington Cinema ‘n’ Drafthouse.
With a legal capacity of 360 people, P. Brennan’s is quite possibly the largest bar on the Pike. That’s remarkably ambitious, especially for an area that’s still in the “revitalization” phase.

On this day 200 years ago, congress chartered the Columbia Turnpike Company, which built the road that would eventually become the modern-day Columbia Pike.
To celebrate the Pike’s bicentennial, the Columbia Pike Revitalization Organization is holding a birthday bash at The Salsa Room (2619 Columbia Pike), starting at 6:00 tonight.
Q: What are some of your immediate and long-range goals as county manager?
A: At this point, I really need to listen and learn a lot before I start saying what I want to do. I’ve already begun the process; I did that when I was [recently in Arlington]. I need to very carefully listen to the board, to spend time with them as a group and spend time with them as individuals, see what their views and their visions are. That’s first. It’s not my role and not my nature to come in and prescribe to people that are well along their way in many areas.
The park is being built just north of Crystal City, adjacent to Old Jefferson Davis Highway, on perhaps the largest open, undeveloped parcel of land left in Arlington County.
Speaking before the ceremonial shoveling were Arlington County board chairman Jay Fisette, park Design Advisory Committee chairman Toby Smith, and acting county manager Barbara Donnellan. State delegates Bob Brink, Patrick Hope and Adam Ebbin were in attendance, along with Arlington board members, county staffers, and park planners.
At least two cases of racist vandalism have been reported in Crystal City in the past two days. The graffiti, which has contained references to Hitler, may be linked to a string of incidents being investigated by U.S. Park Police.
Park Police have issued a warrant for 51-year-old Ronald Edward Bost, Jr., who they believe is behind racist screeds found on the George Washington Parkway and in several D.C. parks.

“There’s no doubt that the popularity of meatless cuisine is on this rise,” said Erica Meier, Executive Director of Compassion Over Killing, a D.C.-based animal advocacy group. “A growing number of restaurants in Arlington and throughout the D.C. area are dishing out more delicious and nutritious animal-friendly fare to meet the increase in consumer demand.”

Laugh. Kristen Schaal, best known as the Flight of the Conchords’ only fan, will be performing her stand-up comedy act tonight at Arlington Cinema ‘N’ Drafthouse (2903 Columbia Pike). Tickets for the 9:45 show cost $20. She has two additional performances scheduled for Saturday night.
The new Rustico is currently under construction on the ground floor of the Liberty Center Two building (4075 Wilson Blvd) near Ballston Common Mall. We’re told the owners are hoping to open in early July.
Rustico Ballston will have as many as 40 beers on draft, according to the YFGF beer blog. According to a Rustico employee we spoke to, it will also have a “huge” two-sided sidewalk patio, featuring more outdoor seating than the Alexandria location. About two dozen sign-holding, banner-unfurling and speech-making residents came to ask the board to keep the David M. Brown Planetarium open.
During his budget presentation, superintendent Dr. Pat Murphy acknowledged the “Save the Planetarium” movement, which has attracted nearly 3,000 fans on Facebook.
A firefighter from the Reagan National-based Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority Fire and Rescue squad was taken to the hospital after he suffered minor injuries battling an electrical fire in Alexandria.
Firefighters from Arlington and workers from Dominion Power also responded to the small blaze on Herbert Street in the Mt. Vernon section of Alexandria. It was sparked when a piece of aluminum siding came off the roof of a townhouse and struck a power line. Witnesses say the loose siding caused a loud electrical “explosion,” which may have started a fire in the attic.
